Subject: Winter running
Sorry for all the "winter" threads...but this is all new to me.

I went out for a run yesterday through the neighborhood, but still encountered alot of snow on sidewalks and roads.   When i got home my feet and shoes were soaking wet.   I also nearly fell dozens of times on ice.

First, isn't there something i can put on my shoes that helps to run on ice?   Thought i read about something here you attach and gives you better traction on ice.   Does the waterproof spray help to use on running shoes?

Also, anyone have a good light running jacket they recommend?   I have Under Armour Cold Gear for base layer on really cold days.   But i'd like a nice running jacket as well.   Anyone have one they like?

Any additional tips would be appreciated.   Yesterday didn't work out so good.   Had wet and numb feet when i got home.

I live up in Breckenridge so snow is nothing new to me. When the streets are plowed and snow packed I use YakTraxs over my Gortex trail running shoes, they work great, for the deeper stuff get your self some running snowshoes, a great work out. Have also seen people put some screws in the sole of the shoe around the outside edge.

For a jacket I use a long sleeve cycling jersey with a thin wind breaker over the top

x2 on the YakTrax.  Love those things.

Here's a link for the screws: http://www.competitiverunner.com/screwshoes.html

I don't use a particular jacket, but I layer clothes and take off as necessary.  I have found "rules" for myself - shorts above 50 degrees.  Long sleeve shirt below 55.  Gloves below 35.  Warm hat (as opposed to a running cap) below 30.  2 shirts below 35....you'll figure it out along the way!

My neighborhood streets are still a mess too.  I sometimes think it's worth a short drive to run or bike in an area that's been plowed.  There were a lot of people at Chatfield this morning doing just that.  Besides, the view of the mountains was beautiful.  I use Yaktrax when I'm running on snow and have even raced in them.

Adding another piece to my notes on the other thread.  I really like my Smartwool running socks (and socks are the only wool I can wear) and just bought 3 more pairs on www.steepandcheap.com.  I like the ankle height for winter as the close the gap between socks and tights better.  I have a pair of the Adrenaline Light Mini which are always my first worn when they're washed during the winter.  The ones I ordered on SAC are the Light Outdoor Mini which look very similar.  Anyhow, I paid $27 including shipping for 3 pairs which is much cheaper than the norma, $15 per pair price retail.  Anyhow, keep an eye on the site and maybe some men's will come up.  Wool performs much better when they do get wet than the synthetics.

I picked up some lightweight fleeces at Goodwill -- great over a long sleeve tech tee and all I need except on the very coldest/windiest days.  I also have lots of cheapo gloves and earwarmers/headbands from Target so I can wash them after every run.

No worries! You're in the right place to discuss winter and everything that goes with it! Judging from the# of replies, I'd say you have people excited. I wish I could contribute but the only thing I've got right now is a pair of crutches I'm going to be winterizing.

If you don't have/dont want to buy Gore-tex shoes, there are Gore-tex socks (both name-brand gore-tex and another brand are available from REI ).

I have a pair that a bought quite a few years ago and they are still in pretty good shape.    At the time I bought them the friends that I frequently hiked with laughed at me for spending so much on pair of socks, but within a couple of months they had all bought them too!

Mixing and matching these + Yak-Trax +gaiters + thin wool socks as needed gets me through just about anything & I run in the foothills near Golden quite frequently.

I've found that except for the 1st and last snows of the season, our snow is so dry that I don't need more than wool socks and regular shoes.  I'm running in Nike Free now and they fit closer to the heel so less snow seems to get in, but even when it does I've never had wet socks.

Went to the Littleton Goodwill and found some good winter running clothing on the cheap.   Bought a Nike wind breaker type jacket to run in.  Also bought a couple fleece jackets and tops....along with a decent pair of Brooks running shoes.

I'm going to use the Brooks shoes to test out the nails in the sole of the shoes idea before i do it on my good pair.

Also, an FYI.....i went to the TJ Maxx in Highlands Ranch and found some Yak Tracks type gadget to try for my shoes in the snow and ice.   Good thing they were only $10!!   So if anyone wants some inexpensive Yak Tracks or sorta like them, head to TJ Maxx in Highlands Ranch.

I'd suggest sheet metal screws instead of nails ;-) nails will probably fall out pretty easily.
