Pre-race routine:

The race was a Saturday morning. All week long it had been damp and warm-ish (50s to even low 60s) with minimal wind. Friday afternoon some shat blew in. The rain came down, winds started howling. As the rain let up late in the day it was apparent that some cold raw shat was on the way. Friday night was a tough night's sleep, listening to the wind pound the house. I wasn't too worked up about this race...frankly barely thought about it through Friday. Just didn't have any real goals. Mary training has left me feeling very confident in my fitness, just no top-end speed at all. So, not much to worry about when you keep the expectations low.
Event warmup:

Drove down to the course with Erv and Thao. Erv talked me into tights, which was a good idea. Winds still howling and we all basically wondered who's brilliant idea it was to run this race in the first place? Kiddingly. The attitude wasn't as bad as that sounds, but the weather was in our heads. Similar to the marathon...I can run in any weather but generally don't have an hour or two to think about it. I just get up and go, and it works out fine 99% of the time. All the pre-race garbage allows plenty of time to fret about wind and cold.

Got to the start and saw a bunch o' donk freaks in some amazing costumes. Props to Deanna's carrot, sgoehner's Fred Flinstone, and of course cweineger's Royal Flush (which I didn't put all together until someone told me. I saw he was a king with a toilet seat on his head and left it at that. ;) ). Not only that, he threatens to beat me with said-toilet-seat on his head. Sweet!! Jszat also looking good in a more simple get-up that looks to allow him to run fast. Personally, I've got zero time and even less creativity, so I opted out. Donkey jersey is all I had. A halloween run should have costumes, so I give myself a negative on that. But A+ to those above and those I may have missed.

Comments:

As we get close to the start, I hear that lrunfit is going to attempt to pace jmwebs at an 8:15 pace. That sounds solid to me, so I ask if I can tag along. Game on. If you knew this race, it's a bit of a gaggle at the start. If there's an "official" start spot, I've never seen it. You just sort of walk out of the building and everyone crowds there until you go. The three of us were WAYYYY to far back for our desired pace. We were bobbing and weaving like crazy, and still crossed mile 1 at a high-8 pace to close to 9. CRAP!! Focus on gaining ground over mile 2. Somewhere in here I'm really feeling some hard labored breathing. Look over and jmwebs and lrunfit are right with me. Uh oh, this is gonna be tough. Finally we realized at mile 2 we'd dome something like a 7:20. CRAP!!! #2. At that point, I think we settled down a tad, and I felt strong again. Sorta peeped my way ahead of Jim and Lisa around 2 or 3. As we approached the main hill on the course I wanted some more breathing room. Hit the hill and passed a bunch of people, all really breathing hard. It's a hill, but it's really not that bad! Felt good about myself there...it can get demoralizing being crushed on the hills around Princeton Club by the gazelle's I run with. Had a moment of realization that "hey, I don't suck!" which was nice.

Post-hill I really tried to stay smooth and fast (for me). It wasn't until mile 5-ish that I got into a crowd that was more my desired pace. Passing became less frequent. Nobody had passed me at this point. I could feel the effort building but was doing alright. 5-7 was just a fun section for me. Kept passing people without jockeying, etc.

By 7-ish I was well into a group of peeps that were of similar pace. At this point you backtrack a bit and get out into the open. Wind at our backs, but the eventual turnaround will occur and put us into the teeth of the wind. I tried from 7-8 to get in a pack, but kept being able to pass them. I'm hearing breathing behind me too, though, so they're either letting me pass, or I've got some peeps just following my lead. In the end, we busted out into the open at 8-ish and I was all alone in front. I could hear the breathing, and I'm taking the brunt of the wind. I tried HARD to maintain/speed up/drop them to no avail. Eventually, one guy passed me that I'd struggled to pass at maybe 5 or 6 miles. FARK...he'd played me like a fiddle! I tried to stay with him into the wind as we did some meandering to the finish, but it wasn't to be.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure...the Lakefront Mary was a huge focus, and I used to be amazed that people that ran lakefront would be out doing this race. Now I'm one of them, which is so cool in and of itself!
Post race
Warm down:

Issued my congrats to Mr. Fiddle, and he laughingly admitted he followed the carrot on my back for a good 3-4 miles. ;) We had a nice conversation. Went to look for fast donks but found none. Eventually cheered in jmwebs and lrunfit, almost on his goal time to a T. GREAT stuff jmwebs! First time I've ran with him, and he's got game, no doubt about that.

Event comments:

Great race...really FUN course and fun time. Someday, I hope to do it in nice weather! Also REALLY like the 15K distance. A LOT!! My current fitness is probably somewhere right in the 15K sweet spot. I'd love to be able to approach a Half Mary with the same mindset (able to push throughout without fear of epic fail.).

Good race.  I'd be gasping and wheezing about 10-15 minutes behind you.

Gah, hate those heavy breathers, they make you feel more winded than you really are!

Great race (and great job "not sucking" as you say ) You've totally got a killer half-marathon in those legs -- just believe in them sticks.

Awesome race. You clearly do not suck! I liked the guy giving you direction on how to go up that first hill as you dropped his azz behind.  Glad I got to run with you, at least for a bit.

i remember last year about this time asking you about the hills of tyranena and you said, "the hills around princeton will have you more than ready for those hills"..........great advice and now you can attest to that line of thinking (tho you have already at other races) in regards to comparing them to discovery............

great job out there morey!!!  EEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWsome way to be the lead carrot for some peeps!!!

Good racing Donkey! Trust some in a Vikings hat to giving advice, although had it been a Viking Helmet it would be a different story.....

Dan - great race.  I love the strategy when wind is involved.   Packs forming, people jockeying.  Sure makes it fun.  That was a solid race, you put together.

As far as the guy with the Viking hat.  You should have ripped his hat off and said, "yo, that is how you run up the hill"  You know, that inner Hulk thing you got going   or, you could have went all Brett Favre on him and said, are you sure that is how to do it?  You don't need to hire an agent?  Do you have tough times making decisions?

Keep moving that ball forward!
