There was a guy that did Kona this year on a fix geared bike - it was the first time anyone has done that. Back in 1996, the same guy did it on a 61 pound cruiser!!

I love this guy!!

Somebody is always going to dare to be different... I can understand why they would, but it doesn't interest me beyond the 'carnival' aspect to it.

Just to play devil's advocate....

Aren't we all just a little different wanting to do an IM? We've all had people say to us "If I wanted to travel 112 miles (or 140.6), I'd just drive." They think we're not normal. They think we're doing it because of the "carnival" aspect. And now, we're kinda saying "why didn't he use a 'regular' bike?" And we think HE'S not normal.

Of course, I'd never race an IM like that, but it IS entertaining!

That is freakin awesome!  I love it.  I love hearing about these anomolies that not only have the physical ability but the spirit to do something like that.

Fred ......... Stop padding your post count!

It's entertaining to read about that stuff. Impressive, not really for me. Personally if I'm going to drop $550 on the race and another $2500 on travel to get to and from the race I am NOT going to spend 5 1/2 hours on a fixie when I get there. If someone wants to pay my expenses to an IM I'll ride a Schwinn 3 speed with a banana seat and a sissy bar!

I read about this on ST and the guy was from Kona.  So it was more like dropping 550 for a race.  This reminds me of the guy who did IMAZ on a mountain bike.  Then posted it everywhere.  I think the mods on this site pulled it.

Also as Bob says, IM's cost most of us a lot of money, so I am going to do mine on a nice (very nice) tri bike

Again, just to play devils advocate... Why does spending a lot of money mean you need to do the race fast? Or on a nice bike? My wife's done 2 IMs in around 16 hours each, and her (self-deprecating) thought is "I'll be out there for as long as I can, taking really USING that money I spent to do this race!"

Again, I'm just throwing out other ideas... I don't know how much I actually believe it...

So what does "IM's cost most of us a lot of money, so I am going to do mine on a nice (very nice) tri bike" really mean?...

Sorry...

I'm referring to the "nice (very nice) tri bike" comment. I was implying (which is wrong) that a nice tri bike meant a lot of $$.

The base of my question is why does spending a lot of money to race at an IM mean that the race needs to be done on a nice bike? What does "IM's cost most of us a lot of money, so I am going to do mine on a nice (very nice) tri bike" mean?

My wife's first IM was done on a $400 road bike, and my first IM was done on a low-end "barely" tri bike that I got for $800.

I think the fact that he did this on a cruiser and a fixie is pure entertainment. How many people would he have made smile (or shake their head in disbelief) that day. People will soon forget everyone they passed or everyone who passed them, but they'll always be talking and laughing about that crazy guy they passed on a fixie! It's easy for people to take this sport too seriously, and he was just lightening it up a little! Fun times!

i think it means he is going to enjoy the expereince...not grind out at 40 RPMS for 7 hours....

but I cannot speak for Fred.....

that said, I think its great, but when I first say this weeks ago, I thought nothing of it....the fact that he had a 1080 on the front leads me to beleive he was attempting to make a statement....

whatever, I ride what a ride and spend money on the sport because I enjoy it and it has made me a better person.

if some guy wants to grind it out at Kona to say "look at me, you dont need a great bike to finish Kona.  all you guys with nice $2,000 wheels look as foolish as I do"

go ahead, but all you're proving to me is you go to extreme lenghts to prove a point that does little to nothing to better yourself or those around you.

this is just my opinion.....of course, he's objective could have simply been to ride a fixie and he used the wheel get some extra speed, and I'm over thinking the whole thing.....

I've been in e-mail contact with Cory, and he added aero bars and used a Zipp wheel to help disguise the fact that it was a fixie. He didn't want to get kicked out before starting. Fixies aren't illegal, but he knew officials might not like it...

I agree with these comments without the 1080.  the fact that he had a $1500 wheel on a $200 bike, to me, means he was taking a job at me, not trying to provide me some entertainment.

but again, I really dont care.....Smile

I think people are free to race in any way they prefer whether it is with the best P4 all pimped up, on a huffy with training wheels or on a fixie wearing a custome

IMO while it is nice for that guy riding a fixie I personally don't find it neither appealing nor impressive just because it doesn't fit my idea of fun or the why I do triathlons. For *me* what's fun is to set up a goal, work hard at pursuing that goal and push myself as much as I can to make that goal a reality. Impressive for *me* is to see a guy jump off the coach, lose weight, get in shape and kick finishing an IM as fast as possible for him/her or a Pro laying everything on the line and pushing his/her body to the limit.

Now, do I approach all my races like that? not really, most racing I do is with the idea that I want to do my very best, however there are certain low key races I like to do just for fun. Those races doesn't require for me to invest much or my time or money and are part of an event in which I usually do with friend on layback settings. This weekend among other things I am doing a beer mile with team friends in a local track, nothing big just us acting goofy for the heck of it. Still in the AM I have a cyclocross race that I am will take very seriously hence I'll be waking up very early to fuel and drive to.

In the end, I personally not knocking off anyone for doing what they do, they are free to have fun in any way it pleases them as long as it is within the rules and not interfering with the experience of others. If that guy, your or anyone else think it is fun/impressive/challenging to race an IM in a fixie then go nuts I say. Would riding a fixing be challeging and somehow different? Sure. But to *me* it would be ever more challenging to ride a tri bike as hard as you can and then getting off of it and run as hard as you can.
