Hey All,

So I just realized that I have been swimming in a 50 meter pool.....and so all my averages have been off since I started swimming in June. I just started today putting it in as meters. So is it pretty rare to have a 50 meter pool? Do most of you train on 50 yard pools?

It kind of sucks cuz all the data from races show averages on a per 100 yards rate.
THoughts?

I don't think I've ever heard of a 50 yard pool.  Not one that's used for competition, anyway.  I think it's our one concession to the metric system.

They're all pretty much metric so the elites can compete with international teams here as well as abroad and not have to get used to different lengths.

ETA: a meter is about 1.1yd.  So take about 9% off your time & you'll have your time in yards.  (1:40/100m = 1:30.9/100yd)

How did you not know you were in a 50 meter pool?  The thing is HHHHUUUUGGGEEE!

I agree have never seen or heard of a 50 yard pool.

Having fun swimming in that man made lake! As for distances just use an online calculator to convert them.

Most of us train in 25 yard pools.  My pool is 25 yards one direction, and 50 meters in the other.  The lanes get moved to the 50 meter direction for Saturday morning masters class, from what I'm told.

Here's a conversion calculation tool you can use.

Hey, thanks for the responses.

Ya, almost every time I swim I go to the Masters classes (1-3 times/week). I really like them. But ya, our 50 meter pool is HUGE....its an outdoor pool but they just put the cover on for winter so it totally feels like an indoor one now. Its really nice. And I figured that most people swam in 25 yard pools....thats good to know. And I'm happy to know that my 1:40's per 100 meters are more like 1:30's...now I don't feel QUITE as pathetic.

Thanks!

I assume you're swimming at Juniper. They expanded it a few years ago. Prior to that it was 40 yards. A real PIA figuring out your pace when you only swam in it 2-3 times a year.

Are you doing Bob's masters sessions?

When I travel away on business, I usually call the public pools in the area.  Most of them seem to be 25 yard pools.  Rarely come across a 50 meter pool.  We have three here in this town.  One, which I've never visited (25 yard).  The other one is an enclosed heated (temperature controled) pool that is open year round........25 yards as well.  However, in the summer we have an open door pool........50 meters, which is great, but only open for a few months out of the year.  Either way, I consider myself fortunate.  $1.00 a day to swim at any one of these pools.  No membership fees.  Talk about a bargain.  Now that is rare.

How do you swim in one direction 25 yds and then turn and swim back 50M?
