Pre-race routine:

Gave up trying to sleep about 2:30.
Had two pepperoni hot pockets.
Got to the T1 area and promptly remembered my aero bottle and my bike bottle were in the fridge in the hotel room. Oh joy!
Got that by the skin of my teeth.
Swim
  • 32m 24s
  • 2078 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great swim! 1st wiggly man was easy to find. After that it got weird and it must look different from up on the boat than it does in the water. I just followed the crowd mostly. Wow, fast swim!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I enjoyed it.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I had long sleeved jersey, gloves and tights. Didn't use any of them. As a matter of fact I got to thinking about what I wanted to wear so much that I forgot any chamios cream at all.

The run from the swim to T1 took a while. That was interesting.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps put some chamois cream on.
Bike
  • 2h 57m 51s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.89 mile/hr
Comments:

Well, riding on an interstate is great :)
I didn't get twinges in my legs the whole time, was happy about that. There was about 5 miles of absolutely HORRID road but other than that it was one of the best rides I've ever done. Just loved it.

80th on the bike. I'm happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Nada, not one darned thing.
Transition 2
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

I'm digging the bike catchers who take care of it for you.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I've got a better idea on how this two different transition areas work and the famous bag o' transition stuff it should be better next year.
Run
  • 3h 02m 48s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Yup, once again I suck at running. BUT, my legs didn't even start giving me trouble until about mile 7, cramped and uncramped for three miles and they locked up about mile 10. That was a change from what's happened before. As much as I hate running this made me happy.
What would you do differently?:

Not cramp? Do a lot more running this year before next year's B2B full, perhaps.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around until the trolly took me back. That was about an hour or two of warm-down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I suck at running.

Event comments:

I LIKE this race. Signed up for next year's full before I had a chance to come to my senses.

I agree 100% about navigating the swim course. I didn't know where I was half the time!

Signed up for the full next year? Excellent chance I'll be right there with you - I'd do it this second if I knew the weather would be as nice!

Congrats on your day.

Great race Daniel!  Congratulations!!!

I was a spectator and I thought the bouys were difficult to see from land, let alone from the water.  I observed quite a few people miss the left turn and go to far straight down the channel.

I also noticed how the bike dismount crossed the lane of runners.  There were a few near collisions between bikers and runners crossing paths. That may not have been an issue until later in the race when there were a lot of runners coming through at the same time as bikers were coming in.

I am SO glad I watched this race before doing it; learned a lot.  Makes me want to do one even sooner than waiting until next Nov!

Best wishes on your IM training!!!

Great job Dan.  It was good to meet you guys.  I had trouble with that swim too.  I also just follow the crowd.  It was funny tough.  Until the squiggly man, I kept everyone on my right, then all of a sudden, everyone was on my left, then all of a sudden everyone was on my right again and finally on more time on my left.
