We cannot run fast.

Mediocre in the water.

We have no significant means of attack or defense.

Thank God for our thumbs and big brains.

All of this started with my attempt to run barefoot at the golf course yesterday.  I'm not sure that I could survive without the EXACT shoe for my demented stride.  We are a lame species.

I'm not so sure about this...the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico have been known to run down deer.  Not becuase of their speed but becuase of their endurance.  And they do it all in skimpy flat soled sandals. That's pretty impressive to me.

"Born to Run" talks about this exactly.  It's really a great book (only a few chapter sin so far) that asks the question how can these people run so far with no injuries yet it seems in the "civilized world" with all of our fancy shoes and orthotics we get hurt all the time...

I just think maybe we have BECOME a lame species (a majority of us at least).  Our potential is pretty amazing.

  • NO injuries?!?! That's impressive. I wonder how he was able to verify such an strong claim. Did he examine every single member of the tribe? It is my guess that he is exaggerating to make his point.

Also, on a hot day, a fit human can run a marathon faster than a fit horse. It's because we have sweat glands all over and therefore can cool ourselves as we go. IMO humans are pretty flipping amazing.

Any irony that they wear shoes when running down their prey?

My body and daily life does NOT resemble that runner in any way, except for the number of limbs that we each have.

I would have given up the chase after 26.2 miles.  If a marathon were 26.3, I wouldn't finish.

Our bodies definitely reflect our daily lives. You are working to nudge that pattern in a more healthy direction, so celebrate. Celebrate also that our blessings ALLOW us to live the daily life we do - with food plentiful and survival rather easy.
