I'm a bit confused....

Do you have a job offer? If so, is the start date flexible?

I've never had a situation where I knew I was starting a new job 8 months out and could negotiate my start date.

I vote one week assuming you already have a place to live for the new job.  Plenty of time to return home, recover, and start on the next Monday.  Starting on a Friday can be good also if you have the choice, since you basically spend the first day getting oriented and getting to know people.  You can come in on the next Monday with a better idea of what is going on.

You should be walking around fine after a day or two.  I did an IM on a Saturday and was back at work the Friday of the following week and it was fine.  I guess it depends on what kind of job it is.  If you are working construction you might want more time than if you are at a desk.  I know that doing minor yard work like digging a french drain floured me a week after the IM.

So desk work = 2+ days, heavy labor, um longer.

Unless your job involves s/b/r I don't see why you couldn't start the next day.  I did IMKY this year, and drove back the following Monday, and was back in my office by Monday early evening.  Sure, I was sore and stiff, but not unable to work...

But if you're asking "what would be more fun and easier?" then sure, take a week off, if you have that luxury.

Take as long as they will let you!  There's a lifetime to work, no need to be in a hurry.

I had a couple scattered days of training at a new position (corporate finance) before leaving town for my first IM this summer.  First full week on the job started about 36 hours after finishing...race was Saturday...drove home 8 hours Sunday night...worked Monday morning.  Didn't give it a second thought.  I suppose if it was my very first day and I hadn't gotten to spend some time with my boss previously, I might have asked to start Tuesday.

(I've also always gone back to work the day after my marathons and HIMs, fwiw.)
