Sunny
Total Time = 15h 35m 52s
Overall Rank = 2187/2423
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 214/235
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45am. Extremely nervous as a first-timer. I was able to eat a bowl of cereal and sip on a G2. Walked over to body marking at 4:15, dropped off my SN bags, set up my bike, had wife apply sunscreen, and waited on the beach for the rest of my family to join us. Peed myself at least 5 times waiting on the beach. Emotional good-byes to the wife and kid then went to line up.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 1h 42m 53s
  • 4156 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the worst swim I have ever had. First of all I found out that I hate saltwater swimming. Second the waves on the second loop were insane! I did the first loop in 42 minutes with very little effort. Not for lack of trying but it was too crowded to go anywhere. I figured I had a 1:20 in the bag. On the second loop the seas were so bad I was more body surfing then swimming. It felt like you were swimming in place getting thrown around by the waves. It was very frustrating to lose so much time on the second loop but I was so happy to be done and out of the water.

Otherwise had the typical punches, kicks, goggles knocked off, and jellyfish stings!
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself closer to the front. I lined up on the buoys about halfway back. I held my line perfectly but could not go anywhere quick.
Transition 1
  • 10m 50s
Comments:

I don't know what took so long. I didn't waste any time in T1. The whole transition area ended up being longer then I thought. Between the chute, the parking lot, and the ballroom it seemed quite long.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I really kept it simple. I guess I will have to play with this one.
Bike
  • 6h 58m 56s
  • 112 miles
  • 16.04 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the worst bike I have ever had! If Kona winds are anything like what we experienced then I have lost my desire to win a lottery slot. The headwinds for the fist half of the race were brutal! Especially during the hilly part. That's right I said hilly. Don't let anyone kid you there are hills on this course which combined with a headwind start to take a toll. To give you an idea of the winds my first "fresh" 56 miles took 3:45. My second "tired" 56 miles took 3:13. I was expecting a 6-6:15 bike so I was quite disappointed in my time. However, I tried to take it in stride and enjoy the day. I was just happy to get off my bike and I was set up perfectly to go sub 14:00
What would you do differently?:

Since lot's of you guys were able to PR I guess I need to become a better cyclist. I don't understand how anyone could PR in those winds. The course itself was great but the wind slowed my average speed by like 8mph. I bought a new Cervelo P2 for next year instead of my brothers roadie and I plan to go out and justify the purchase!
Transition 2
  • 08m 8s
Comments:

Faster but still slower then I thought I would be. I am not sure if I was moving slow or the transition was just bigger then I anticipated.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure.
Run
  • 6h 35m 8s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 15m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where it all came tumbling down. I ran very strong through mile 10 and was on pace to easily finish sub 14:00. All of a sudden my GI track shut down. I couldn't even take in water. Everytime I tried to take in anything including water I threw up. This is very frustrating because I am a runner first and usually run a 4:00 marathon. With my stomach shut down I kept on as best I could but quickly ran out of energy. The marathon quickly degraded to a shuffle, then run/walk, then walk, then stagger. By the end I had a difficult time standing up and forming words. In addition my feet ended up with 12 blister covering the majority of my feet. Some were blisters on top of blisters. Very uncomfortable.

I am not sure what happened but need to figure it out before IMWI 2010. I am thinking maybe a sodium deficiency? After crossing the finish line I did not go to the medical tent but should have. I just wanted to see my wife so bad. I cried and hugged her for a long time. The rest of the night revolved around me shaking uncontrollably. I had no ability to regulate my body temp and I was completely covered in salt. I think I may have stopped sweating and my temp got up to 102. It took about 48 hours to feel back to normal but I am ok now. It is just so funny because again running is my strong suit and I was worried about the other two events.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure but I need to figure it out. I am thinking of trying the salt tablets so I don't need to down as much gatorade and gels to get the sodium. Once my body started rejecting water I knew I was in trouble!
Post race
Warm down:

Popping blisters, fluids, nutrition, and pretty much bed ridden for 24 hours.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Big seas, Strong headwinds, and whatever happened to me on the run.

Event comments:

In the end I dug as deep as I possibly could and crossed that finish line. Not the way I wanted to finish but I finished with 1:25 to spare! I am looking forward to a redeeming performance at IMWI 2010

been there before and believe me it takes a real Ironman to get to the finish line.  There is nothing easy about this distance and you never know what hurdles will be thrown in front of you.  I don't think anyone can understand what it takes to dig down and finish when your hurting like that, there is no doubt you will do better in WI.  Get Job on becoming an IM.

Your poor run performance was most likely a result of how hard you felt the bike was. Have you ever heard about the study in which Kenyan marathoners were trained for an IM and came NOWHERE near there open mary times because they didn't have bike fitness. Read GOING LONG by Joe Friel and see how he emphasizes that IM performance is based primarily on your bike fitness and pacing. No matter how great of a runner you are, if you don't have the bike fitness or pace it poorly, your run will suffer. Let me start my saying I SUCK at all three disciplines and this was my first IM and first marathon and probably don't know $hit, but that being said, I did not find the winds to be that bad at all. Yes, it was windy but certainly I have trained in those conditions before. I have read several of your posts throughout training regarding how your run is strong and how you might go out fast, you might go out and mix it up in the swim, etc, etc... Always thought in my head you had a plan set up for a rough day. What was your pace in the initial 10 miles? what was your HR/RPE? Your GI system may have shut down because your pace was to fast. Your run will only be as good as your bike pacing is no matter what your previous run experience is. HOw many 100 mile rides did you have in? Was your nutrition plan tested in training? Did you have realistic paces set up for yourself? I don't mean to sound like a BI-atch but I know that you have a tremendous love for the sport and want you to figure out where you went wrong. I had a coach and read incessantly on IM training and that set me up for a good day. My time wasn't great or anything but I would say the day was not hard for me. I felt bad once around mile 18, troubleshooted my symptoms and got back on track quickly. Many times along training I kept asking my coach why are these paces soooooo slow and the constant zone 2 crap. If left to my own devices I most likely wouldn't have even gotten to the starting line.

All that being said, you hung in there in very difficult conditions and finished and YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! Congratulations.

I believe the perseverence and endurance it took to overcome what you went through is an amazing feat in itself.  I now believe that you will rock ironman WI because of the mental toughness it took to finish something like that given the circumstances.  Focus on the areas where you felt really discouraged, and they'll become strengths in no time.  Keep goin man..keep goin

15+ 100 mile rides, ran at a 10-11 minute pace usuallly run 8-9, really thought I was keeping in my limits.  I don't know why I found the bike so tough but that wind just beat me down.  I also forgot to set up my bike computer in the morning so I had no way of telling power, speed, etc..  Just did it all by feel.  I have definitely never done a bike ride without the computer before so that might have contributed.  As far as the swim I just have no way of preparing for those waves.  I just wish I would have gone harder on the first loop because I came out of the swim with a lot of energy.  I just could not make forward progress quickly in the second loop.  Maybe I need better technique.

I am sorry to all if I seem real negative in my race report.  That was not my intention.  It was just disappointing to not have race times line up with your training times.  Especially when you spent a year training for it!

Hmmm, now you got me. Sounds like your pacing was right on the run and your cycling fitness was there. Maybe the swim took a little too much out of you and maybe the computer had something to do with it. Do you have a power meter?? Going on feel is usually a good thing versus mph because of winds. I also think maybe riding in those big "packs" like there was out there makes people go harder than they normally would on a training ride.

Don't beat yourself up. You did it! But I understand your disappointment. These discussions will help you figure it out for next time. Maybe post in the iron talk section and see what the Big Boys have to say.

The second loop was also harder for me. I think I was 3-5 mins slower. I too felt like i was swimming and going absolutely NOWHERE! I could see the bottom too and that confirmed it... I WASNT. I also got off peoples feet on the second loop and was doing all the work myself and that was dumb but it was hard to get back to the pack. NO doubt the second loop was rough!
