Is this a smart way to cross-train? Or will this just lead to injury?

BTW, that's NOT me... just a video I found.

Dragging heavy stuff is a great workout and a great way to strengthen the entire posterior - glutes, hamstrings, and calves. I would say that it's comparable to running hills. I don't see a real injury problem unlike running with a weighted pack which places more stress on the joints. Like with anything, start slow and build up work capacity. Also, I think a shoulder harness would be more comfortable than a belt harness, but this comes down to personal preference.

I love dragging or flipping tires. My personal favorite is hitting it with a sledge hammer. Great workout and stress reliever!

Training to run faster by dragging something that makes you run slower doesn't work. Turn the harness around and tie it to something that covers 40 yards in 4.5 seconds when you run 40 yards in 4.7 seconds.... you will learn to run faster.

Trust me.

That's a good point, Bill. But is there any benefit to building STRENGTH by dragging a tire? Maybe do speed work one week for speed, and drag a tire the next week for strength? Or just stick to running fast and doing squats, lunges, etc at the gym?...

Actually, this has been shown NOT to work. The movement pattern of being pulled along at a rate faster than you can run is different from actually running on your own. It may even have the opposite affect - because the body is not used to running this fast, it triggers inhibitory mechanisms to slow you down. Not to mention the injury potential is high. To increase sprinting speed (not really applicable to tris), sprint more and hit the weight room and work on the posterior chain.

For endurance, the tire dragging is really like running a steep hill.

Bobby McGee has athletes run pulling tires but as I understand it, it is less about building strength than it is about learning proper body position.

I saw Jillian Michaels do this on Biggest Loser the other night. Course, this was in the final weeks of the show and Jillian weighs about as much as a pencil, but still....it looked really hard. Jillian was digging in too. I was wondering about the effectiveness of this move. I'd like to try it!

I think to answer the OP question is it a good way to train?  IMO yes.  You are essentially building a better athlete with these type of moves.  This is used more for sports in which your balance and power will be used.  Football for example where you will be hit and need to be able to maintain your feet and run through hits and tackle.  I use this with my guys every off season.  I also like to work them the other way by having them push a sled for a more balanced approach.  With that said will this help you with "speed" in triathlons?  I have my reservations about saying yes to this.  This is because you will almost never be bumped or pulled and you really are looking more for repetition and energy conservation.  SO if your goal is speed come race time I would say there are likely other things you could be doing that would yield better results, but if you are looking for a good workout and becoming a better all around athlete then yes.  Just be sure to use a waist strapping system and not a shoulder harness to avoid too much pressure on your lower back.
