Age Group Rank = 3/20
Pre-race routine:

I headed down to Tempe Town Lake around 7:30am so i could get in my long run on the IMAZ course before the race. I ran a full 16.5 miles, two of the three loops, in just under 2 hours, so I had about an hour to recover before the start. I saw lot's of friends down there and it was a really fun scene.
Event warmup:

16.5 mile run. :)
Swim
  • 1h 04m 51s
  • 4000 meters
  • 01m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

I lined up on the far right as the lake curves and it seemed like the shortest line to the far marker. It was pretty crowded and there was a good amount of contact for the first 200M. It's funny, contact doesn't bother me at all. Maybe growing up swimming, I feel very comfortable in the water and don't panic. As a kid, we used to try and drown eacthother all the time!
Things spread out on the first 500M down leg but there were still a good amount of people rounding the first 2 turn bouys. The second lap I was very much alone, the front group having gapped me. I just swam a very steady, even pace and effort and never felt like I was pushing. A slight wind did seem to pick up and the lake was a bit choppy. By the thrid lap, I was catching people still on their second and used that to do some drafting and navigating around them. I was forced to almost stop and make major course changes to get around bigger groups, but was able to quickly get back into a good rhythm. Obviosuly, Ironman won't have back marker traffic or as many turns. On the final loop, I picked up my turnover and raised the effort for the last 1000M, but still was well within myself.

You need to work on sticking to the faster groups feet.  If you want the AG win, you need to be out of the water in an hour or less.

Great swim though, training sounds right on target!

Shouldn't you be tapering?

4000 meters is actually 2.48 miles and the RD said it was likely another 25M longer than that. This pace would be a 1:02 IM swim and based on the effort level and being tired from the 16 mile run an hour before, I should be right where I need to be. But Rick is right, I need to stay with the group much better.

I've only swam after a run a few times, and I'd bet never after a 16 miler.  It's a very different feel, much like your first brick workout.  The fact you swam this after a killer run just an hour before the start tells me you will definitely be 1:00 and probably sub 1:00.  Awesome job!
