Hey everybody!
I'm new to this whole triathlon thing and I'm finding myself wondering if a training partner once a week or so would provide some motivation, tips, or just company on long runs/rides/swims.

I'm in El Monte and work in East LA. I go to church in West Covina so I'm in a fairly confined area.

I try to work out in the morning before 7:45am which is proving to be a bit difficult due to the cold air competing with my warm blankets... But I'm flexible. Work from 8:30-4:30 and I often-times  ride my bike to and from work.

Tuesdays and Sundays are no good for me...

So yeah.

Anyone need or want a training partner?

Too bad about Tuesdays as I will probably be going down the San Gabriel River Trail on December 8 in the afternoon.  What is kinda fun is to start from Wilderness Park and go south until you hit the River's End Cafe, have lunch and then turn around and go back.  A nice and easy thirty miles.  And you get food.

LeahDD,

Are you talking about Wilderness park in Arcadia. I am very familiar with that area as I ride up through Arcadia and up to the Chantry Flats gates most weekends. Are you riding down Foothill, through Monrovia and Duarte. I was just curious if there is another route you might be taking. Never been to the Cafe, I'll check it out.

No, I start from Wilderness Park in Downey, right where the 5 and 605 freeways meet, about halfway down the San Gabriel River Trail between the Santa Fe Dam and the end of the trail.  The Cafe has OK food, not great, not bad, eatable.  But location is almost everything.

I'm working both on getting my bike cadence up and building hill strength.  The trainer and the trail is really about the most practical ways of working on cadence.  I live very close to Chantry Flats and I am hoping to build up enough strength to do that route soon.

I'm not fast, but it would be nice once in a while to have company down the trail.

I am in Temple City and do most of my running/biking at the TCHS track. I run, well really run and walk, Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays from 6pm-7pm.

I just started and am working on the couch potato to 5k plan. But I am always willing looking for company, motivation, etc.

Good luck

Ok, I know the area and the widerness park your referring to.

Re: Chantry Flats, I usually only Ride up to the gate at the top of Santa Anita. I live south of Duarte in Arcadia so its a nice hill challenge. Some days I keep going past the gate and up the mountain but I usually ride alone given my hectic schedule so it can be a little intimidating heading up the hill at dusk.

A nice loop you can do is starting from Encanto Park (or anywhere along the loop, really), ride along Royal oaks to Monrovia, then work your way to the golf course in Arcadia and hop on the Rio Hondo BIke trail. Continue till the end of the trail (intersection of San Gabriel & Rosemead), cross the intersection and come back up via the San Gabriel river, over the Santa Fe dam, till Encanto. 32 miles and pretty much as flat as it will get.

Hey BenV, I've done the Rio Hondo to San Gabriel River loop. I end up coming back to Arcadia via Live Oak. Its a good ride. I was thinking about continuing down the RIO Hondo some day but not sure where I'd end up.

Pretty simple, if you continue south on the Rio Hondo the RH will merge with the LA river and  this will take you to Long Beach. I do that ride quite often when I feel like doing some flat ride. The other option is to go south on the San Gabriel river, that trail also continues all the way down but ends up in Seal Beach.

Going North on the San Gabriel river (beyond Encanto) will take you to Highway 39, where you can do some great climbing.

Thanks. I've got up the river path where it ends into the 39 but have never ventured as far south as the beach using either the San Gabriel or Rio Hondo River paths. I need to give that a try in the near future.

you will have to wait for the summer and fall semesters as they are full for spring. i would assume there are night swimming, but not too sure.

so i finished the 80 mile ride yesterday so much better then a thought i would. i went with my brother, and he is a little slower than me. so for a while i went 24mph, and then slowed down the pace with him at 19-20mph for the remainder of the trip down. made it to seal beach pretty easily.

and then on the way back i took off ahead of him going in the 21-22 mph range from 40 miles till about 65 miles. waited for him to catch up and then we rode home together.

so i now know, in an isolated situation i can ride a HIM distance bike ride, and still have a good amount left in my legs for the run!
