Over the summer months, a lot of my friends play golf and I love to tag along and play since I've been playing it for 10+ years.

When I play a round, I notice I get quite sore calf muscles and am relatively tired. I have no problem with playing over the winter months as it doesn't affect tri training too much, but over summer it's a different story.

How do you mix golf and triathlon? Anyone have experience?

Two things, make sure you drink lots of water during the round and stretch before and after the round. Try to play on a lighter training day (keeping in mind that you really can't play on an off day, as this is would ruin the rest day...).

I've mixed the two for 10 years or so and never experienced any leg pain. I'm not sure about that one. If its a hilly course and you carry your clubs it could be a strength issue perhaps? Don't know.

I second what the previous posters said - hydration and a hilly course, but as a golf professional, I have to throw in that you may have too much of your weight on your toes.  This will cause you to tighten your calves to maintain stability throughout your swing and keep you from falling forward.

My biggest issue isn't soreness, it is finding the time for both.  Just can't seem to fit it in.  I played a whopping 36 holes this year!

Finally, something in which I have a unique expertise.

I have found that my new found muscles actually do cause pain when I play golf.  However, my manifests itself in my left knee.

I'm sure that more stretching and less posting on BT would help...but...

(Note:  Even though I have replaced 80% of my golf practice time with training, I have had one of my best seasons to date.  Only played in my "A" tournaments.)

When i play a few hours after a 3+hour bike ride or a 2+ hour run....my game totally sucks.  I don't have the power i need to push though the ball.  Lighter days for sure.

2007 Handicap: 6 # of tri's: 0

2009 Handicap: 16 # of tri's: 4

See any correlation?

I basically have given up golf for tri's. I can workout at lunch, and on the weekends, I get up early and am home by 11:00, at the latest.
With golf, I was lucky to be home by 1:00 and momma didn't like that!

It's tough to play golf at a high level while tri training.  I would start off fine, but somewhere on the back nine the fatigue in my legs would catch up to me and I would stop driving through the ball at impact.  I would hit a lot of blocks and pulls.

This summer I was training for an IM and I stopped golf completely.  There was no time for hobbies.

Hello

I think the running& biking  make your legs stronger and improve your golf game.

As we all know golf takes alot of practice and most of us dont have time.  At my best 5 Handicap.  Now with a real job, family everything else we need to do plus training,  I play maybe 4 times a year and if I could break 90 I would be happy.  When I play now it is in a fundraising tournament where you play Captains Choice or some other goofy format.  Golf is lot more fun now when you play CC style.  5 handicap days-too much practice & way too serious

Kevin

I play a lot of golf, about an 8 hdcp, and almost always walk.  Never have a problem mixing, although I usually don't play on the same day as a race or very tough workout.  Usually golf in the morning and workout in the later afternoon/evening on the weekends.  If I am playing golf mid-week, I usually will not have time to get a workout in as well.

Seems to be what I'm thinking, maybe I just need to consider that if I play golf, there will be no training that day?

I golf pretty frequently. At least both days on a weekend and any other day off I got. Fridays during the summer was our Friday night golf scramble. I have a 7 handicap.

I did notice that my legs would feel a little tight after golfing, no idea why.

And, I can tell you from experience, DO NOT try to play golf after running a marathon!!!
