I really want to do a half in 2010.  I figure that if I'm going to do a half, I may as well take on one that makes it worth the challenge.  I want to do Savageman and I want to climb the wall for no other reason than knowing some folks CANT!  lol

I want to see if anyone else in central PA is planning on Savageman to see if anyone is interested in coordinating some brutal hilly rides over the summer.  I found a great ride last weekend.  I'm pretty sure that if I can do it a few times, Savageman should be no shock.

I've set later in 2010 as the time for me to try a HIM.  And I've been looking in September as the time to do it.  I'm registered for the Eagleman Aqua-Velo in June but want to do the full race.  Savageman is the only one in my time frame that isn't 6+ hours away!  However, this was my first year riding bike and that course looks very tough.  To me at this point, it's scary.   Not that I want to pick an easy race, I just want to have some chance of succeeding.  It is a race I definitely want to do -- I just don't know if it'd be the best pcik for a first HIM.

Come 1 December, I'll more than likely register and then bust my butt on the bike for 10 months to get ready.  And when I race, I might pass on the Westport Wall in favor of saving my strength for the several 'mountains' that also have to be climbed on the bike route.

The practice route I have in mind is across Rt 30 to Ft Loudon.  The mountain is a great climb as you go from Ft. Loudon to McConnelsburg.  Once you get to McConnelsburg you turn onto Rt 16 and head back up over the mountain again to Mercersburg.

Here ya go.. just a simple 19-20 mile ride.  The route creater shows almost 5000 ft of climbing.  That should get us ready for Savageman, right?

that's way out there past Gettysburg. Looks like it's mostly 1 big climb. From what i've read about Savagman, It's non stop hills, almost ridiculous. Looks like a good training ride though.

Correct.. I grew up over there so I know the area well.  Before football season, I would ride my bike from Mercersburg to Cowan's Gap State Park and then run around the lake.  By the time football camp started, I was in better shape than the rest of the team.

There are two huge climbs that last for miles.  You climb the mountain from Ft. Loudon to McConnellesburg -sp? and then from McConnellsburg back across Rt 16.  The rest of the ride is hilly but nothing realy nasty.  It would be a nice cool down.  I plan on doing it this year.

Hey Michael,

I did Savageman HIM 2009.  I loved it!  This is a very challenging race indeed with very steep grades.  Savage Mountain is 7 miles long with several steep accents.  My RR is http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=181806.

Anyway my race plan is to do this race again for sure.  Not sure about 2010 I am making a stab for Kona at IMLP in 2010.  If that happens SM for 2010 maybe out.  Then again I just may decide to do it.  I have a few friends that are planning SM 2010.

If you want to ride some steep stuff send me a PM.

There is a couple of HIM less than 2 hours away from Harrisburg, PA.  One of them (Belly of the Beast) is a late year race September.  Check it out.  I have done the Jersey Man HIM twice now.  I thought the race was well done same RD.

Thanks.  I'll look these over.  I want to make my decision before year-end.  I definitely want to do Savageman, but it doesn't have to be this year.  That's a tough bike course and the bike is my weakest link.

You know.. I hesitated a bit but what the heck.  I'm not questioning anything.  I turn 40 this year and darn-it; I just registered for Savageman.  I'm starting January 11th on my plan to get ready for the Black Bear OLY in June and then I'll roll into the 70.3 training for September.

Please let me know if anyone wants to do some long climbing bike rides.  I'm no competition for anyone.  I entered as a Clyde and this is about finishing in a respectable time and beating the Westernport Wall for me.

A lot of us in SW PA are planning on Savageman. I'm doing the Oly, as are a few of my friends, and some more of us are doing the HIM.

I probably SHOULD have just registered for the OLY but at the end of my first OLY last year, I was amazed and somewhat disappointed that I had left a lot in the tank.  I underestimated myself and paced it too slowly.  From that, I determined that I have the time and no excuse not to try a half this year.  I'll find out if that was a mistake or not.  LOL
