Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes, 'Tis, Teacher Man) narrated his own works.  I think hearing his stories in his own inflection and Irish brogue makes the audiobooks better than the written books.

One other point--audiobooks frequently tend to be abrigded versions of the written work, which is usually an abomination.  Look for unabridged versions.

Also, for iPodists, some public libraries are offering downloadable audiobooks.

yep same here, and you get unlimited free selections. (refering to how jazz downloads the CDs). its pretty fast, and you can go back for anything you want/as many times as you want.

One problem I have with MP3/WMA downloadable audiobooks is that they tend to come as really long tracks, so if I want to listen to something else like music in between, it's a real pain finding my way back to the spot in the book where I left off.  I guess iPod has some kind of bookmark function, but I'm using Windows Media Player (on Windows Mobile).

Our library (and we live in a pretty small town) has audio books you can download for IPod on their web site.  Another option to consider to try something out.

I don't know if it's your cup of butterbeer, but my blind friends SWEAR that the narration of the Harry Potter books makes them amaaaaazing on audio. To the point that they feel sorry for sighted people who have only read the words; they feel we are missing something.

I have an Audible membership as well.  I normally pick up scifi/fantasy books though.

Lois McMaster Bejold's Miles series (space battles and lol humor)
Jim Butcher's Fury series
Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet (space battles)
Naomi Novak's Black Powder War - (Napoleonic Wars with dragons!)
The Host by Stephanie Myer.  Nothing like body snatchers!

newbz - 2009-11-22 5:27 PM go to your local library, evn tiny rural ones have good slections normally. growing up i have heard a few hundred of them in car trips and at night, you'll find anything you want. and normally you have a lot more you can cehck out at a time.

I think I will head to the library for some that I can listen to in my car.

But problem with the ones from the library is you can't put them on your IPOD without massive amounts of work.  I've tried this - the computer considers them music CDs and you have to download each one, rename each track and then make a playlist.
You're right- real CDs are a bigger pain than audible files- but it's A LOT less work if you don't rename each track. If you just leave each track the same, but put the correct author in, then in the title spot put 'Title of Book Disc01' for the first disc, then 'Title of Book Disck02', etc., you can then just click on the author's name, and all of the discs should stay in order. That's what I do for my shuffle and for my regular ipod and it works great!

question about putting these in your itunes library - when you play music on shuffle do these get played too?

There is an option if you select them all, and get info (it's in the menus, or command I on a mac) you can check a box that says skip when shuffling.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
The Dew Breaker by Edwidge Danticat
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (narrated by the author)

I agree that the narrators are who make the books - One of my favorite narrators is Dick Hill.  He mostly reads murder/mystery stuff I think.  I am on my second book by Stephen White right now.  First one was Dry Ice and now I'm listening to Dead Time.  Same characters in each but they are all stand alone.

Also read by Dick Hill that I loved was True Evil by Greg Isles.
