WooHoo! Might be a little crazy, but I'm in. This will be my first Alcatraz swim.

It is a blast. Best advice I can give you is make sure that you take it all in. I would stop about 1/2 across and turn around and look at it all!  You will love it.

I'm in as well.  I've only ever had two races on my "to do someday" list:  Boston and Alcatraz.  Never really wanted to deal with the lottery, so I thought I'd jump in on the new race since it was first-come, first-served and the same race directors.

*bump*

3 weeks out and it looks like the race is only half full (900+ on the participants list vs. the "1800" Tri-California is touting in the website promo copy).  Fine with me...more elbow room.

Wife and I are driving up from LA on the morning of the 27th, leaving early on Monday to return...hopefully have some free time in the City on Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.  I got to be the "sherpa" for the trip when my wife ran Bay to Breakers in May...this time it's her turn.

Anyone else set for this?

You read my mind on "bumping" this.  I am in and am so excited.  I am arriving late Thursday evening with my "sherpa" (AKA husband) from the Atlanta area.

I did the "official" escape from alcatraz in 2008 and to say the course was crowded is an understatement.  I'm definitely excited about the longer bike course and smaller crowd.

I'm doing the Water World Swim alcatraz clinic on early Friday 8/27.  I did it 2 years ago and found it to be immensely helpful.  Here is the link if anyone is interested: http://events.waterworldswim.com/events/default.asp?ciid=3168  It's also a great chance to get some photos from the "swimming in the bay" point of view.  It's like sight seeing triathlon style!

I'm up for a BT dinner get together the night before the race if anyone else is.  I don't know any peeps from Atlanta going to this race. (I'm a transplanted CA girl - can't wait to be back in my favorite place on earth!)

I hope the training is going well for everyone!  This is the most exciting race course in all of triathlon (for me, anyway).

Andi

900 is a pretty healthy amount for a first year event.  1800 seems awfully optimistic.  Escape from the Rock only has registration of about 200 I think.

Not getting in til midday Saturday...hoping to at least drive course, but probably won't get to ride it (although I know a good chunk of it from previous trips to SF...plus some of it is on the Bay to Breakers course & expo area, which I've done twice).

Lake Michigan reference brings back memories of some very cold swims as a kid (grew up in Milwaukee).  Definitely comparable to what you'll get in SF Bay.

Sure, but in Michigan, how will he train for the sharks in the bay? Wink

some possibly useful info below for the women who are racing.  this was sent to our tri club.

By way of introduction, my name is Kate and I work on behalf of Tri-California Events, closely with Meredith Rich. I wanted to get in touch about a really great training event we have planned this weekend, exclusively for women who are competing in or considering competing in the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz. The event will feature Q&A sessions and opportunities to go through the course and train with experienced coaches including Gary Emich. And best of all, it's free!

While I know the training event is only a few days away, we wanted to see if you can pass some information on to the women athletes in your life, or perhaps share on Facebook.

Therefore, I've included below a writeup on the event, and you can also find a note on our Facebook page that can easily be shared on your page (http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=119384001446155&id=1604064981&ref=mf).

Please let me know of any questions and thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks,

Kate

So...fun race...not my favorite bike course, but the swim was a blast.

But I just have to brag cuz I won the run in my AG...by quite a bit, actually...56 minutes of constantly passing people (partly because I was so far towards the back off the swim and bike...and a horrible T1)...

...and I was 21st overall out of almost 700 on my time up the "sand ladder" (and 15 seconds faster than the next fastest in my AG there).  Pretty pleased with myself for that.
