Swim:  Local hotels.  I simply ask them for a membership and they say they don't have one, but they let me swim there as  much as I want, which is a lot in the winter, the lake if summer.  $0

Thought about doing this as well in my small town, might ask next summer.

Aside from standard equipment replacement stuff (tubes, new shoes, etc)... I don't spend anything. My gym membership is about $20/month, but it's covered by health insurance.

I truly don't know exactly how much... nor do I really want to know.

I would guess that we spend somewhere between $1500-3000 per year for both of us (I'm a duathlete/running/cyclist and my wife is a triathlete and does some freestanding running races and a couple of bike races each year). That does not include the travel we do when we bring our bikes along, but since we would drive there anyway, I really wouldn't count that anyway...

The way I see it, we rarely go out to dinner, I can't remember the last time I went to a pub, and we never go to the movies; pretty much the only thing we spend money on is training/racing and that keeps us healthy and happy... there's no cost involved, just an investment in our future.

$80 for a punch card last year for pool access.  In the spring time, I swim outdoor as much as possible.  That's all I spend on training.

I don't even join a gym!

Thanks for all the ideas. I guess I tend to join more gyms and groups because I really enjoy the group support, social atmosphere and competitive camaraderie (misery loves company right Smile)

I’ll probably let go of the 1 expensive gym membership (the one with marble and indoor/outdoor pool) in the spring and use the lakes and city pools for swimming so I have more funds for races and a BT membership.

Fortunately I’m not good with gadgets and not one to spend much on complicated gear so I do save money there. I also consider triathlons as my entertainment (who has time for movies and happy hours, I need my sleep). I totally agree, I hope staying fit and healthy will definitely pay dividends in the long run.

No gym membership -- swim at home.

Occasional bike maintenance, equipment and apparel as needed (shoes, shorts, etc).  I don't know how much that adds up to, but I really don't worry about the cost.  Whatever it is, it's totally worth it.

You just go to a local hotel to swim?  Have you gotten in any trouble from that?  Have you had any difficulty getting in anywhere (e.g. room key requirement)?

No issues whatsoever.  There is 4 "good" hotels with pools in my area.  I go in the evenings since the real managers are on day shift and the person in the evenings always say, help yourself at all 4 hotels.  if you don't ask, you don't get.

Well THIS year was supa expensive because I had to buy all the gear, including bike and wetsuit.  (I at least got a beautiful fluid trainer from the boyfriend for my birthday.)

Ongoing costs?

Gym membership (includes pool): $45/month with 3 months (summer) on hold at $5/month
Running shoes: 3x$80 a pair
Tubes: $30 or so.
Entry fees: $300 (mainly because of half IM I'm doing.  They ain't cheap.)

Not too bad.  Also, all my races next year are local, so no hotels, airfare, etc.
