Porfirio - 2009-11-24 12:08 PM So then I wonder, again from a very unscientific perpective, is it really a runner's "high", i.e., chemical-based, or perhaps, an elated feeling due to the sense of accomplishment (like, "hell yeah... I know people younger than me who can barely walk to the elevator w/out breaking a sweat".

These are things that make you go "hmmmmm".

My experience goes along with Daremo, it is definitely chemical and not simple a sense of accomplishment. I have to have exerted myself to t acertain level for a certain period of time to release the endorphins (or enough of them). Apparently I reach the "level" more consistantly in the water.

Yes. Almost every day. It's one of the reasons I run so much every day.

I too agree w/Darmo. While it's probably not PC to admit this, through high school & college, I "experimented" w/"stuff" that made you "happy". Running... is the closest to those wild young days of mine. (Yup, I'm very aware of all the studies on excersize/endorphines.) I just think it's more. Particularly, that sense of accomplishment much like checking off items on your lists of things to do that you've been procrastinating.

Yes, I get a runner's high.  Not every time I run or ride, yes I get the 'high' from cycling as well.  I do consistently get the feeling of euphoria when I race.  I love it.

Yes. I love the way running makes me feel. Plain and simple.

Toward the end of a short, hard run or after an hour on a long run are when I feel it the most. Pretty much always right after, also.

Occasionally I will get an actual "runners high"   It's a complicated unpredictable set of circumstances that will produce it for me.

The run needs to be of a medium distance.
Outside temperature somehow matters, as well as my body temp.
Needs to be a high tempo run.  Too fast, I don't get one, too slow does not happen then either.
Even if all above is true most of the time it STILL does not occur.

On the other hand.

If I do NOT run, or perhaps bike hard/long,  my brain/body gives me the reverse of the "runners high"    I feel like crap.   I only really feel what I consider "normal"  if I have run.   It seems to set things right.  Now this is what i consider to be an addiction.  No Run/Bike = feel like crap (withdrawl)

If I do, it's usually do around the two mile mark.  Unfortunately at my age about the time I'm warmed up, I'm worn out.

I used to get it about 1 hour into my long runs while training for a marathon. Smile
I haven't got it on long runs while training for a tri! Frown

Eh... if getting high means... being a bit clumsy, unable to do math problems in my head... and unable to think of anything remotely complex...

I guess I do. Of course I have to run more than 10 miles to get this feeling.

If not... then I don't get high off of running.

I used to hate running.  This time last year I started in more but not a whole lot.  And then I bought myself an "I <3 running" shirt so that every time I saw it in the mirror I would use it as a sort of positive self talk.  Now I love running and every run gives me a high feeling.  What a difference a year makes.
