Pre-race routine:

I had to smoke some turkey breast for Thanksgiving so I was up early and building a fire. Relaxed, had some coffee and breakfast waiting for the time to head to the race.
I picked up Dudley, Tammy and Evan and we were off to the race!
Event warmup:

Just a short run with some pick ups and some stretching.
Run
  • 48m 22s

Comments:

I seeded myself about 10 yards from the starting line hoping with a race this size it would not allow me to be stuck behind people or in other peoples way. It worked out pretty good. My plan was to hit the first mile at a fast, but manageable pace and try and hold 7:45 - 7:50 pace after that. First mile I was at a 7:25 and it felt good, I had some good pace booty to drag me along so I decided to stick with this pace until I couldn't. Next couple miles were 7:30 and 7:36 so that was good, plus I hit a pretty solid 5k pr. I was right at 23:00 minutes and my previous best was 23:44 so I was stoked about that. The next mile had a short hill into the wind and I allowed my mind to wander and fell back to 8:00 minutes. Once I snapped back into it and realized my pace group had slowed down I pushed it back up for the next mile, but then we turned towards the finish. The last road mile is up hill and today into a pretty good head wind. One of the other would have been ok, but I allowed them to slow me down. Plus my pace booty slowed down too! :)
Anyhow, it was a good day and other than that last damned mile, I am happy with the race!!!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run some more hills!!!
The high mileage training plan I am on for the marathon is proving the theory of running a lot = running fast!!
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around a bit and hooked up with Dudley and Tammy for some post race snacks. Headed home pretty quick afterward so we could get on with the Thanksgiving festivities!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Progress is being made! I have room for improvement, but one step at a time!

Event comments:

Always great to get to race with friends!!! Thanks to Dudley and Tammy for coming out!!!
After doing the 4.4 mile race last year, which was fun and this race today. I like this race as it is a bit smaller on better roads so you can actually run. But, I think there is a 5k around here on Thanksgiving someplace!
