Comments:

I went out with the goal of averaging 10 min/mile or better, but my plan was to take it relatively easy the first 5 miles and see what the course gave me. If I was feeling good at the 5 mile mark, I'd start pushing for the last 5k.

The first mile sucked, mainly because people didn't follow directions. I spent the first mile dodging walkers, strollers, & people with dogs...all of whom were supposed to be at the back of the pack. I wish the race directors were more stringent about the requirement. I know there's only so much they can do, but I don't think they were checking at all. It took a good 3-4 minutes before we were even jogging because people were trying to unwind the madness. That's why my first mile time was so bad. Once things thinned out some, I was able to get into a groove and start running. From there on out it was just staying around Z2 and seeing what kind of pace that turned up.

The rest of the run was honestly pretty uneventful. I saw a guy wearing skin tight shorts - I'd call them tri shorts, but they went down to his knees - that were pained to look like jean shorts. Those things cracked me up. The race directors put in a new part to the course about 5 miles in, running everyone up a big hill on Beckley that was killing a lot of people when I came through. I saw a lot of people walking that hill.

About 4 miles in I had made up the 1:30 I lost on the first mile & was feeling good, so I started pushing a little harder. 6 miles in I was still feeling good so I pushed even more. The last 2 miles I was cranking along at an ~8 min pace & I finished with a significant reduction in my PR.

Previous PR: 1:21:56
Time Today: 1:15:48
Difference: -06:08

What would you do differently?:

Not much, this was about the best I could expect to do.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a few things they had out there(yogurt, orange, banana, pizza) & walked around to find Karen.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much.

Event comments:

They need to enforce the rules on dogs, walkers, & strollers so the beginning of the run isn't such a debacle. They also ran out of water at the end of the race, which shouldn't happen. Other than those two aspects, I really like this race.

A 6:08 PR in spite of the dogs, walkers, & strollers is a significant reduction (and pretty dang good).

Running out of water?? Good thing it was a cool day, that could've gotten ugly.

You ain't lyin'. They need to either limit the enrollment or buy a lot more water.

Great job hun! I'm glad you reached your time goal and then some! Maybe if I ever do this "race" again, I should follow you on the course- you obviously know how to dodge all the walker, kids, and strollers!

Oh, and I am glad ONE of us got food. Sounds like you ate enough for both of us... ha!

Good job out there, fast man. I'm impressed with your last two miles. I was just poking along out there at the end....I needed to lock in with someone like you to drag me to the end!

Does that mean I would be your pace booty?
