Subject: Patching tires

After almost two years of excellent flat tire karma (yup, not a single flat for almost two years...and only three EVER EVER EVER) I have had two flats in the last week.  Both times I have been carrying a patch kit, spare tube, and pump.  I figure that on training rides, it's always worth patching the tube at least once just in case you get a second flat.  That way, you still have your spare tube.  Obviously, in a race I would not take the time to patch a tube...throw the new one on there, use the CO2 and go on your merry way.

BUT...I was UNABLE to patch either tube.  Got the patches on the tubes okay...pumped them with a little air to be sure they were sealed...put them back on the rim....the first one would never fill and the second filled until I got a decent amount of pressure in there and then started leaking again.  The full ride sagas are detailed in my logs from this Friday and last Friday if you are interested

Anyone else have this problem?  Does anyone else bother to try to patch a tire?  I think I am sworn off tire patching for life....I'd almost rather carry a second spare tube!

On the bright side...I'm getting REALLY good at putting tubes and tires back on rims...

I carry a patch kit, but I would always use the spare if I have it. I don't usually have good luck attempting to patch so take my comments for what they are worth.

A tag-along question...does anyone ever use more than 1 of those tire levers? There HAS to be a reason there are more than one sold together...but I never seem to need more than one...

I don't have much luck patching so now I pitch 'em. Hardly worth the effort as I buy the tubes in bulk from Performance for ~$1.50 each.

As far as the second lever, some tires fit tighter than others, and I occasionally have to use a second lever on those. Just bought a speed lever, haven't used it yet, though.

I am a patcher....those patches that chemically bond with the tube on contact...seem to work really well....make sure you check your tire on the inside for anything re-puncturing your tube....carry an extra tube if you don't want to patch...there's no religion on this ;-)

I put my spare on and keep riding, then patch when I get home. I carry a patch kit and/or second tube in case of a second flat but (knock on wood) have never had to use it.

I always use 2 levers, guess it's just what I was taught.

With that kind of bad luck you might want to check out the condition of your tires.  I was having a string of flats but there was nothing sticking to the insides of the tires when a friend told me that if the sides of the tire are worn (I guess you might call them the sidewalls) the tires would tend to collapse and the result would be repeated pinhole flats.  A clue to this is that you might have a hard time getting the bead to seat evenly/properly in the rim.

She was right...new tire equaled no flats.

If you've been riding on those tires for 3 years it might be worth a look.

I read your log for yesturday. 56 miles-WOW! At what mile did you flat? Riding in El Paso all I get are flats-usually 3 or 4 a week, and I even have the tube lining in. I used to patch my flats until I had one that wouldn't take about 11 miles from home-and my wife was out shopping. Stopped in the LBS and he was surprised that I was riding with just a patch kit. His advice, which I usually take, is to carry a spare tube and patch the old one when you get home. After three patches buy a new tube. It's worth the piece of mind.

The flats are on my new baby...a less than two month old Cervelo...he has maybe 450 miles on him.  So...I would hesitate to think it's worn out tires...maybe very thin tires?  One was the front wheel and one was the back wheel...but both times I could feel the air coming out through small holes in the tire itself.  But I thought most bike tires were good for at least 1000 miles?

My good old reliable Bianchi never got flats   And his front tire has gone over 2000 miles without a single flat.  But he's much slower than the new toy...

To "the bear" or others:
Which tubes do you get, and where do you get them? is 'performance' performancebike.com?
I've gone through 4 tubes in the past two weeks, so am planning on 1. getting better tires and 2. seeing if I can buy tubes in bulk for cheap.
Thanks!

Yep. The link here ( http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile_combo.cfm?SKU=14301&estore_ID=&subcategory_ID=5411&CFID=20926099&CFTOKEN=95464571 )should take you to the "10-pack for $20" deal. Buy some other stuff (always need stuff) to get your total up to $75, then use the coupon code "6001215" (before 6/7/05)for 20%-off to get your price down to $16. Then if you're a Team Performance member, you get another 10% in bonus points, final price of $14.40 or $1.44 per tube.
