Pre-race routine:

Arrived plenty early to set up my transition area given that this was my first tri.
Event warmup:

Just moving around to keep from freezing! It was one of the coldest August days I can remember, completely overcast with light rain probably somewhere in the fifties. My cold tolerance is low so i was shivering.
Swim
  • 17m 47s
  • 800 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt very good. This was the leg I was most concerned about before starting the race. Although I practiced swimming longer distances in open water both with and without the wetsuit, I'd never done so in a large crowd.
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation, I veered off course on rounding the final buoy.
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

Never having practiced this I had no goal in mind other than, do it without flailing. Mission accomplished.
What would you do differently?:

Hard to say, given that it was raining, I rearranged my set up to keep my equipment dry. I think the wetsuit came off with ample speed but I need to get my helmet on faster and also work on running with the bike and mounting it quickly.
Bike
  • 1h 07m 40s
  • 18 miles
  • 15.96 mile/hr
Comments:

I simply wasn't in great bike shape and I knew this going into the race. Given my wedding in July and subsequent honeymoon I hadn't put in many miles on the road. I put time in on the trainer but I wasn't prepared for any serious elevation.
What would you do differently?:

Get on the road more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

I was so happy to have finished respectably that I wasn't overly concerned with my performance. Nonetheless, I felt I moved at a pretty brisk pace. I did lose some time as I was considering keeping my cycling jacket on.
Run
  • 24m 51s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt great. Given the distances I've been pulling this summer 3 miles is a straightforward distance. I'm very happy with my pace though, especially during the third leg!

I also lost a few seconds when I double backed to pick up garbage that fell from fuel belt. I'd still do that; another 10 seconds or so isn't worth littering.
Post race
Warm down:

No stretching (something I need to address) but I helped myself to several of the available bananas.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience and, with regards to the pack, lack of training.

Event comments:

Fantastic first experience.
