Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

up at 4am, managed to eat some oatmeal and have some coffee and water, got to the race site just after 6am and got set up while the transition area was very quiet, walked around and found other friends who were doing the race
Event warmup:

about 150yd swim just to get the feel of the water and the slick ramp leading to/from it
Swim
  • 25m 20s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was in the second wave so there wasn't much waiting around after the open group went off, 1st leg of swim was good, I got a little off course on the second leg, swam further than I needed to, I did freestyle the entire way with short rests for navigation checks and to fix a few goggle issues (fogging then leaking)
What would you do differently?:

I'm pretty pleased with my swim, I would have liked to have been faster, but this was my first OW tri and a pretty long distance for me to swim, I finished very strong
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

long way up from the sm ramp to my bike rack and I didn't run :), wanted to compose myself and get ready for the bike, a little trouble getting the wetsuit off the left foot, trouble getting my socks on
What would you do differently?:

not much, I could have been faster, but I wanted to make sure I did everything right and wanted to feel strong getting on the bike
Bike
  • 46m 30s
  • 20 kms
  • 25.81 km/hr
Comments:

felt good on the bike, kept my cadence up, got passed by alot of guys on tri bikes with disc wheels, had a team javelin guy pass me and yell "go team javelin", saw two guys at the race with team javelin uniforms
What would you do differently?:

pretty good bike for me, this is the sport I spend the least time with so I can't expect to be super speedy
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

nothing spectacular here, everything went as planned, took a gu and headed off to the water station
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 35m 25s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 05s  min/km
Comments:

it got very, very hot out on the run course, I really struggled here, my run was sub par, but I was moving as fast as I could, I decided to go without my hat, may have been a bad strategy, I got passed by tons of people on this run
What would you do differently?:

run faster as always :), I didn't have anything left at the finish, so there you are
Post race
Warm down:

lots of water and gatorade, I was hot, walked around until the transition area opened to get our bikes out

What limited your ability to perform faster:

for my first OW tri and 2nd overall I think I did about what I expected, my goal was sub 2 hour and I met that, more experience and more training will help me get faster

Event comments:

This is an awesome race, held on the naval base in Norfolk, extremely well organized, great volunteers and a great post race party at a park with beer :), barbacue, hot dogs, pizza etc, I will do this race again.

You rock Sue! Congrats on a great race.

And yes, it was hot today. I'm not sure about race time, but my run was in 90 degree heat.

You are a real triathlete. Now, I might need some pointers from you. Have a great relaxing Sunday evening.

Nothing like exceeding a goal! Congrats on your great time and your first OW tri swim.

I've always heard great things about this race and I guess they are true. Good job.

Thanks for the RR! I've wanted to do this tri for the last two years (just because it's where I grew up), but haven't had the right timing. Good job on the tri and congrats on your first OW swim!

You wore Javelin stuff, but not a BT singlet??

Great race. It being the first hot, humid day here in VA, I'm sure the run was hard. Good luck in your future races.

Great Job Sue!!

It was a long OW swim for a Sprint...and you did great even with leaky googles that fogged up.

Adjusting to the hot weather without any hot weather training is tough....but you ran even if it was below your normal.

You did it and had fun....you rock!!

Keep up the great training and open water swimming!!

It was a long swim for a sprint tri, atleast that's was I was thinking even when I signed up for it. Both local tri's (both sprints) here use 1000m swim distance; hopefully by the fall tri I'll be faster at the distance.
