Just wondering what you do about leftovers in general. I am extremely loathe to throw out anything because I just feel so bad about wasting any food. A couple of months ago, I had to throw out half a sandwich on the run in an airport when traveling. I still feel bad about it, lol!

Some of my friends throw out stuff so easily like the day after the food is prepared. Chime in with any thoughts?

When growing up, my mom would keep leftovers for so long that we spent many years with low grade food poisoning...as a result, the second I am done with it - it is dead to me. Won't eat it again, would rather not see it again.

(After going to culinary school, the horror stories about the food danger zone is enough to cure ANYONE of eating leftovers)

I have a routine: place leftovers in glass containers and place on to shelf of fridge . Ignore aforementioned leftovers. Notice green fuzz growing in glass containers ........... throw science experiments out........repeat as necessary!

Why bother? Because I grew up listening to stories of my mothers time as a POW in Russia and  how she was hungry for years. My Mom never throws anything out!

I try to eat leftovers... if a couple days go by and I don't eat them and throw them out, it's not the end of the world...

I try to eat as much of them as I can but with my husband gone all week and my kids being so young, some gets thrown away.

I'm single, so leftovers are somewhat of a necessity in order to save costs - if I cook an actual "dish", then I will have it for a few days. I currently have a container of pasta and meat sauce in my fridge, that I made last night and had for dinner, ate for lunch today, and will eat again tomorrow. It will still be fine, and if 2 days later is too much, then I have the world's highest tolerance for tainted food b/c the only times I've ever gotten food poisoning were from freshly prepared items I ate elsewhere.

I love leftovers!

Since there's only the hubster and I, I always have a few meals left, so if it appears it won't be eaten -- say a yummy slow cooker roast, or fill in the blank -- I'll apportion it into single server freezer containers, label and date.  Into the freezer they go and voila, instant meal when the mood hits ya.

However, there are times, I dig out the freezer and think, ehn, what was I thinking freezing that thinking I'd eat it again, and into the trash it goes.

But Aquagirl's suggestion is equally intriguing :-)

Left-overs? That's usually lunch for the next day or two.

You are sooooo right about this!  I can actually TELL when I get a low grade FP.  I watch expiration dates like crazy also, avoid metal in fridge and scrub the fridge with bleach at least once a month.  Same thing with freezer burn items.

Exactly.  I always try to cook extra so I have lunch, but it's hard to do with teenagers in the house.

And just to gross out the clean freaks, I frequently leave the leftovers out for the boys to graze on and pack the crumbs up the next morning for my lunch.  No one's gotten sick yet!

I frequently make meals that produce leftovers on purpose. They make great lunches or another supper when I don't have time to make something.  That being said, if I have to eat it too many days in a row I get sick of it and it gets neglected.  It's a fine line...

Well there are two kinds and home-cooked and then restaurant food. Some of each are better to eat.

Restaurant that I ALWAYS eat leftovers (if there are any):

Chinese
Pizza
Pasta (unless a lot of cheese on it  - never heats up right)

Restaurant the I NEVER eat left overs:

Steak - always reheats very badly - that is why I always finish.
Chicken - see above for steak

Home Cooking:

I don't like much left-over home cooking other than pasta; it seems a lot of home cooking doesn't taste as good the next day.

For dinner tonight I made pasta--two and a half pounds of beef, two pounds of pasta, onions, peppers, garlic, tomato paste and sauce, and mushrooms.  For two of us.  Hooray for leftovers!!!!!

I just eat leftover steak cold - if it wasn't too overcooked, it's still soft and tasty the next day even if it's cold. But yeah, trying to reheat steak always ruins it - makes it all dry and grey.

I eat leftovers all the time.  Whenever I cook I try to make extra so my husband and I (or at least one of us) can have leftovers for lunch the next day.  Most of my leftovers end up getting eaten, but occasionally I throw something away.  I don't worry about it too much.

I give my leftovers 2-4 days before they hit the trash can, depending on what's in it.  Seafood gets 2 days max, something without meat might get 4.  This seems to be fine for me, I've gotten food poisoning twice in my life and neither time was from leftovers.

I observe a one foot rule.

Anything deeper than one foot in the fridge is off limits.

I have a husband with a hearty appetite as well as two teenage boys, leftovers are rare.  The only thing we had leftover from Thanksgiving dinner was ham.  We started eating ham rather than turkey because we noticed we weren't eating all the turkey.  We eat the ham no problem by itself, in quiche, eggs, sandwiches.

Food we prepare for other people, we pay attention to expiration dates/cleanliness etc. because we know a lot of people are fussy about these things.

Food intended for internal consumption, including leftovers, is treated much more roughly.  I've eaten week-old leftovers no problemo and we routinely buy "expired" bread, milk, and meat.  (We do use up the expired meat/milk pretty quickly though. )  I'll save sour milk and use it in baking projects instead of buttermilk (THANKS MOM!! ) rather than throw it out.
