I'm in too! Looking forward to this race! Question for anyone local, is the bike course something you could do on a weekend ride? i.e. are the roads fairly safe for cyclists?  Was thinking about coming up to ride the course since my parents live near Knox. in Loudon.

I'm in too.  This will be my first 1/2, but training like mad for it.  I was worried about the "upriver" portion of the swim but I called the race management who stated the upstream spillways will be closed along the tennessee river the day before and day of the race.  There should be minimal current according to them.  I heard the bike course will be rolly, but that's unconfirmed.  Anyone know about the bike route?

Here's what I know so far:

1.  The swim will be wetsuit legal most likely
2.  The bike will be rolling - how difficult that is depends upon where you're from and how accustomed you are to riding hills

I have a friend who lives in Knoxville; I've asked him for information on the course.

Debating between the Olympic and the Half...  Plenty of time to train for either, since I'm coming in with a solid level of fitness, just finished my first sprint today toward the front of the pack and am addicted!  I had so much fun!  Would Knoxville be an okay course for my first half IM?  I can swim and run, my biking is still coming along...

Knoxville is So-so safe for cycling. I probably wouldn't do the course when school is in, and then not without at least a friend, Knoxville roads aren't all that well maintained, and though we have come a long way (IMO) there are still plenty of drivers out there more than willing to run you off the road.

Happy New Year!  18 weeks and counting until this race!

I was in the Knoxville area (actually Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge) last week.  Talk about a BEAUTIFUL setting!  Smokey Mountains in the background.  Rolling hills.  Looks like this is going to be an awesome venue for a race!!!

Here is a preview of the bike, as we were all discussing. If you have Google Earth, or the browser plugin, you can even do a flyover of the course. Can I log the 56 miles as training, even though I did it on my couch

I signed up too. I also have never done a full distance ironman before. I am finding that I am struggling with motivation even as I am so psyched about doing this. I have been doing marathon's for @ 15 years and triathlons for the past 3 or so, I've done a bunch or 1/2 ironman distances--never encountered this kind of sluggyness before I am interested in finding someone who would like to partner up as kinda support buddies to cheer eachother on and report in to, share strategies, goals etc. Anyone interested? You can reach me directly @ [email protected]

i'm definitely in the same boat as you. according to what i've read/heard about knoxville, both of us will find it a challenging course, especially for our first half-iron. i'm psyched though!

I was psyched to see the host hotels so reasonable.  (What kind of sad world is it when a $100 hotel seems reasonable to me?!)  I think I am going with the Hampton since it is closest to the park.  Hubby and kids can pop in and out of the hotel while I am racing!

O-k, starting to build some of those miles up - I have a half mary in March and I think we might be thawing enough to bike outside soon!  For now it's me and my computrainer and season one of Leverage on Netflix!

Our race is coming up soon - where is everybody?  I actually got outside for my first outdoor bike of the season on Sunday.  Can I just say - that is SOOOO much better (and harder) than my computrainer!  Hopefully I'll get outside atleast once a week until May!

I know, it just got embarrassing with my post after post!  I'm starting to taper for a half marathon in 2 weeks, but working on building my bike mileage now that we are finally thawing out in VA.  Just booked my hotel room @ Holiday Inn.

Hey all!  I've been MIA from BT in general with IM training..I just can't keep up with logging my workouts here and with my coach.  I need a couple weekend hours to catch back up with my logs!

Excited about this race, I'm doing it as training for CdA in June, so it'll be a great gauge of my fitness and times when I race, it's been awhile since I've done a half!

My training rides right now have the same elevation gain, so I think I'll be ok for this, hooray!

Hi all!

Considering this as my first 1/2.  Did full marathon last week.  Working on swimming (did 1.2 mile yesterday with a short run after).  Am completely clueless on bike.  Bought one and have done like 15 miles around the house.  Have done a few spin classes.  Am I going to be able to do a 56 mile in 7 weeks?  Whatdya think?  How much bike training per week would you recommend?  How much could be on a trainer vs outside?  Thoughts?

Can you do it?  I think so - but you are going to have to commit to putting a** in saddle and spending a lot of time there over the next few weeks!!  Outside vs. trainer - I am still getting 1/2 my mileage inside at this time of year because of weather,  indoor training is mostly quality work - intervals of power work, while outdoor work is endurance building with a little bit of speed thrown in.

Without your logs to see, I would say find yourself a plan, or a coach and jump in at 7 weeks out - you'll know in about two weeks if it's too much.  Good luck!!

7 weeks out, how are you guys feeling?  Me, the run is good, the swim is getting better and the bike is building, spending a lot of time on hills. And I just got race wheels wooohooo! Starting to get pretty jazzed!

Wow, this is coming up fast!  It seems like so long ago I signed up.  Feeling good and ready for it though!  Does anyone know what the water temperature is going to be like?  I am debating between sleeves or sleeveless wetsuit...  Thoughts?

I have a half marathon this weekend and my run is feeling pretty good.  For this time of year it seems like I have gotten outside riding a lot, but longest outside ride is 40 - so I gotta kick that into gear and get some good miles in.

I have no idea about the h20 temp, I will ask next week on the radio show and see what they say.   I will have my new sleeveless by then so I am hoping for upper 60's, for me that's great sleeveless temp!
