Comments:

I was starteled when the gun went off. They were playing the national anthem, then when it stopped the gun went off. So, I start swimming, and swimming, and swimming, and swimming. After 10 minutes of heading to the first buoy, I realized something is not quite right, maybe a very strong current against me, or the waves coming in where harder than I was expecting. After a few more minutes, I realized that the buoy had come loose and was drifting out away from the coarse. I continue to swim to it for another 5 minutes before I encounter a life guard on a jet ski telling everyone to turn around and head back. My 600m swim turned out to be between 1200-1500m. The only thing that sucked was I went out way to fast, and burned myself out after 12 minutes which should have been my finishing time.
What would you do differently?:

Only swim 600 meters.
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Bike
  • 55m 15s
  • 18.6 miles
  • 20.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Forgot ALL my liquid nutrition for the bike at home. I took the HEED was going to use for my run, but it was much less concentrated. About mile 5, I cornered and knocked my Hammer Gell off the bike. About mile 16 of the bike I just bonked and slowed down to about 15mph. I got moving again after a girl on a squeky ass mountain bike passed me, I said unh unh, and picked my pace up to 22 to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to bring my nutrition to the race. I was soo not focused on the bike, probably a result of the swim.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Had a real hard time putting shoes on standing up, had to sit down to get them on.
What would you do differently?:

Use baby powder in running shoes
Run
  • 35m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Basic had no energy on the run. It was the worst tri run I have had. Had to walk twice during the run.
What would you do differently?:

Don't forget nutrition for bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Took in 3 scoops Recoverite, talked with Ken (Manatee Express) and Marcy.

OH MY GOD ROB! Last time you forgot your aerobar bottle, and now ALL the liquid nutrition? Maaaaan! Don't you pilots use checklists? What a crazy day you had today!

It sucks that the buoy floated away, but.........it's kinda funny in a way, isn't it? (Then again, if it were me, I wouldn't think it was funny.....) ROFLMAO on you finally getting your ass in gear when a girl on a mountain bike starts to pass your Cervelo!!! GOOD STUFF!!

Way to hang in there when you're having a less than perfectly planned day!

Rob,

Great to meet you and Joann. I think we got a helluva story with that swim buoy. I have decided it was a conspiracy by the jet ski guys and that they were actually pulling that bouy for their own amusement. It would be really funny if I wasn't there.

HAHAHA! That's what makes it worse, I have used a checklist for every race.

This time I thought the mrs packed the stuff up.  Oh well, another learning experience.

Maybe we need to switch to the "Challenge/Response" type.

Maybe I could get Ian Castro to develop my checklist, but, I would probably get 500 emails in the process.

I think that was the furthest I have swam straight out trying to catch that yellow buoy. When I turned around I could barely see the shore. I was very disoriented. Plus, from the start I was looking at yellow caps (2nd wave)-peering through the yellow caps looking for the yellow buoy. I'm a pretty good swimmer so after passing many yellow caps and seeing yellow buoy then
not getting closer---just a little frustrating.
