Subject: recs for clothes washers and refridgerators- help?!
Looks like I'll be picking out some appliances over the next week. I broke the dishwasher door and thus have ordered a new one which won't arrive until Jan 1 or so. I think I will also get the rest of the stuff replaced, and things have changed a lot since I last shopped for the like in 1997, and I'm not getting great info on the web. Keep in mind this stuff won't be, um, overused. Here goes!

Front loading washers- apparently there is an issue with mold growing in them around the soap dispenser area making clothes a little malodorous, and it sounds somewhat common, yet it is still the most popular style. Anybody heard about this/experienced this?

French door refrigerators with the lower freezer box seem to fix issues the side by sides had such as holding a frozen turkey or a pizza box (more likely). Has anybody had experience with them or heard about them?

Yes, I do have pizza. Once or twice a week. I haven't had pizza since, uh well, I think Fidel was top dog in the Castro family. Lets just say I'm thinking some new kitchen hardware will make the doorbell ring. Chicks really dig a sexy fridge. I'd like to do this right cause it's gonna cost about as much as a Wilier Cento Crono with Centaur.

Any help you gave on my queries would be well appreciated.

With the front loaders.......mold is easy to get, but easy to fix. Either take an SOS pad and scrub the door ring every now and then......or just run the washer on hot with some bleach once a month. Should take care of the problem. As far as makes/models......LG hasn't let us down yet.

Fridges with the drawer freezer, while cool.....make sure you get one with an ice maker (it's easy to forget about something like that).....I don't know if you Canucks use ice in your soda....errr..."pop". Don't have a rec on brands

As far as your pizza problem.....I can't help you with that. Just tell the ladies you're a doctor/lawyer/independantly wealthy and a triathlete, should work once or twice......other than that, you're on your own. I can recommend some websites but that's about it.

We have a front-loader Kenmore washer.  Love it.  Saved money (alot) and got more capacity (alot) and got the "regular - old-skool" dryer.  Doesn't match, but we don't show-off our laundry room.  Love it.

We have an LG bottom-drawer-freezer french-door fridge w/ice maker & water in one of the doors.  Love it.

Love our Samsung front loaders.  I always leave the washer door open for the drum to dry out and do the same for the soap area too.  x2 on cleaning it once a month.

Lots less water/electricity.  Money well spent!

No experience with the french door fridge/freezer on the bottom but that it what we will be upgrading too when we upgrade.  Love the freezer drawer deal. (have side by side now and HATE IT!)

Front loaders are pretty good.  We wipe the door and seal down after doing a couple of loads and have not had any problems since we bought it about about 8 months ago.  You can also purchase a cleaner you throw in once a month or so that is supposed to help with the mold but I think we do it every couple of months-ish.

Still have an old side by side fridge but (knock on wood) it still works fine.  When we buy the next one I will be looking into the over/under too.

Have you been landing on top of ALL of your appliances and breaking the doors, accidently?

Front-loading washing machines - Yes, there is a problem with stuff collecting around the rubber/plastic seal under the door and in front of the metal drum, and it's a big pain on how to clean that area, especially if one has a pet and hair collects there.  We have an LG front-loading washing machine and like it a lot, moreso than the old top-loader we used to have, BUT, yes, you have to wipe down/clean the door area very well since water accumulates there and doesn't air out fast enough (we leave the door open).

Look at Fisher and Paykel for an efficient and high-quality alternative to a front-loading washer.  We LOVE ours.   Easier to load/unload than a front-loader, but similar in efficiency and water usage.

(they also have a top-loading dryer!)

As for the bottom freezer... if you use your icemaker alot, it's a pain.   Our Kenmore side-by-side holds a frozen turkey and is currently home to a stack of pizzas.  Otherwise, you're correct.  French-door with bottom  freezer is da bomb.

Finally, our kenmore elite dishwasher is SUPER quiet.  Like, I-have-to-tell-people-its-running quiet.   And it does a great job.   My wife had a cow when I told her we were buying an $800 dishwasher.   She's  believer now.

I've had one of the French door refridgerators, and I really liked it. The space inside, the width, and the freezer on the bottom. More energy efficient to have the freezer there, and the things you get to most are at a more ergonomic level.

What I have now is JUST a refridgerator in the kitchen. The freezer is in the basement. If you already have a freezer, and don't use ice a lot, then you might consider that.

THIS!

Can't help you with the washer as we went top load when we replaced ours a couple of years ago but since you are getting at least two appliances I think a membership to Consumer Reports would more than pay for itself.

Have you been landing on top of ALL of your appliances and breaking the doors, accidently?

Yes. But I had to fall on the fridge door 4 times before I put a noticeable bend in it.

The hot saleswoman said that I'll get a bigger discount if I buy 5 appliances and that my energy savings will offset the cost in no time. (I figure about 50 years).

Thanks a lot folks. I will then go for the french door fridge and look for LG or Samsung names- online reviews also seem to back up your comments. I really do appreciate the help!
