COJ advice needed:

Bro-in-law only gave one suggestion for his son.  A $90 Bionicle something-or-other.  Not gonna happen.  What's the 9-yo boy crowd have on their wish-lists this year?

TIA!

LEGO is almost always a hit.  K'nex is also pretty cool.  The kids in my class also like magnets.  I have a set of little magnetic balls and sticks that they can build 3-d shapes with.  Neat stuff and build smarts too. *smile*

Basically anything they can build with.  Then they can use it for their cars/bionicles/action figures/etc.

There are many less expensive Bionicle sets out there, saw one for $15 that my son wanted.  I'd second the building toys.  Also Erector sets are great for this age too.  Price ranges from $10-$100.  If he likes Star Wars, I'd go with Star Wars Legos.

Sounds like he wants one of the ships.  You can get any number of Bionicles starting in the $7 range.  The most expensive guy right now is Toa Mata Nui and he is around $50-ish.  It all depends on what he already has ..............

Yes, I have a 9 year old son (and 6 and 3 year old ones ....... all into Bionicles and Legos).

Full disclosure: I work for REI.

Is Dad getting the bike for the boy? If so, maybe get him a helmet/bell/cool horn?

REI has this awesome Lego Headlamp that's great if he goes camping or is in Scouts..it looks like a little Lego man, and the LED's are in his feet. We can't keep them on the shelves (trying to find it online to post to you....). Or if he's a "mature" 9 year old, you could get him a regular "adult" headlamp for camping (it's great because your hands are free). Some here: http://www.rei.com/product/736938, http://www.rei.com/product/793266,http://www.rei.com/product/786024

There's also this Wind Power generator set:

What about board games? Everyone likes board games?

My 9-year-old nephew wanted games for the Wii, Lego sets (the big ones) and football gear.

I'd also suggest asking the kid himself. They usually have LOT of ideas!

I was thinking a hatchet, a pup tent, or a tactical flashlight, but then again, we were more of an outside kind of family.

Gotta agree Lisa... does he have a video game console? Find out which one and get him a game... Lego Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

Transformers are also big again.

My 9 year olds list consists of Lego's and Star Wars and a combination of the best of both worlds for him Lego Star Wars. Any sort of video games involving Mario would probably work. Do you know if he's into Pokemon at all? My son and all his friends can talk about any of the things I've listed here for hours.

I have sons that are 9 and 10 yrs old, plus three nephews that age.  They want Bionicles too, but more like the $15 kind.  They are also into Bakugan.  They don't use the cards or anything, but basically they are just figures that are curled up into a ball until you put them against metal and then they spring open.  They like to run around the house testing what is metal.  They seem to be the hot item at school.  These can be anywhere from $3 to $30.

They also like Wii games specifically Lego Starwars or Indiana Jones, any Lego sets they can build, especially Starwars.  These can run from $6 on up.

I got them camping headlamps last year and they love them!   They use them in their beds at night to read.  Cheap presents at $10 each.

K'nex are fun too as they are interchangable with Legos.

Like Lisa said, you can always ask the kid.  Good luck!

Our little guy, 7, is tending a little towards the indoor life at the moment, and as his Dad and I are mad outdoorsy types, we wanted him to do have some more outside toys. So, we bought him a swingball set. Not sure what the equivalent is up there, but swingball is like tennis on a pole. He loves it and it's giving him a chance to develop some physical hand-eye coordination that is sadly lacking for him.

Well there are two paths on this one (and yes I have a 6 and 8 yo)----guy I work with isn't a big fan of his bro and SIL so he asks me every year---so what would be a good gift this year??  That translates to What will be the MOST annoying toy to his parents---so far we are batting 100% with loud, big gifts that the kid has loved and mom and dad have hated!!!  Or you could just go with all the good ideas listed above---star wars and legos are a perfect mix/hit!!

Heres an idea.... what did YOU enjoy when you were that age?  I found out getting my son things that I liked has helped me bond a little better with him.  I start playing with the toys or telling stories about how I do this and that with it.

My son, who is ten, loves many of the things so far listed. He also loves skateboarding, soccer, swimming....    So, just about any sporting equipment can be a nice gift.

Recently, I have been on a very tight budget, and to accomodate, have done some 'home-made' gifts - stilts, a skimboard (was a father-child project), and a kayak ( which was a major project!)
Anyway, I just wanted to suggest the idea of making something that we wish we had received as a child, or spending some time together to make something.

Got a soon to be 9 yr old boy and he's with most of the items already listed....  but he also started collecting quarters from all the states this summer.  So he's getting a coin display box for these quarters....
