Subject: Best places to Camp and Mtn bike in Austin???
Hey guys, me and a friend are wanting to get out of town in a few weeks for a weekend and go camping, mountain biking, and hiking. Were thinking somewhere around Austin. Anyone have any good ideas? Were both intermediate mountain bikers and are looking for somewhere pretty to camp and some fun trails. Ive read about Mckinney Falls and Emma Long Metro Park for camping and Barton Creek Green Belt and City Park (Emma Long)??? Are these well maintained and worthy of a weekend get away??? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks guys!

I think you would be happy with Emma Long.  It has both camping and mountain biking/trail running.  Very hilly though, if you're into that!  City Park is the same as Emma Long.  There is good mountain biking at Barton Creek, but no camping.  You can also swim at Emma Long with a wetsuit.  Well, I would suggest Barton Springs for swimming so you don't have to worry about boats.

McKinney Falls is close in, so you won't have far to drive.  From there, Rocky Hill Ranch is maybe 45 minutes.  Primarily soft pack, roots, lots of swooping trails.

City Park (also called Emma Long) is very technical, but lots of fun.  There are plenty of big drops.

Muleshoe has primitive camping and a good loop for riding.  Reimers is not far from Muleshoe if you want to double up on some trail riding.

Post up on www.bikemojo.com for good trail input.  It is a San Antonio and Austin mtb forum.  You might even find a group ride.  That is ideal for Barton Creek because the main trail is just scratching the surface of the trails to ride.

Never been there to ride, but I hear there are some great mtn biking trails in SE Oklahoma and SW Arkansas - Ouchita trail, Broken Bow - there is camping available, but also some nice cabins...  I think its about the same distance as Austin.

+1 on the Emma Long / City Park suggestion.  As mentioned earlier you can hit the greenbelt too.  I will also second the recommedation to Smithville's Rocky Hill Ranch is great too and about  an hour east / s.e. of Austin.   If you camp there I'd suggest bringing some bike lights and saving some leg power to get a lap in at night. Fun stuff.

Couple of friends do the Greenbelt, Rocky Hill, and one does Walnut Creek, but you'll find more beginners there..

Rocky Hill Ranch is nice for camping and riding.  Not convenient for evenings downtown though.
