Expert 958 Mississippi | Subject: Digital Camera Suggestions So, I've never owned a digital camera. My fiance and I are getting married in May, and neither one of us has a camera, and we'll obviously want to bring one on our honeymoon! My mom is willing to buy one for us for Christmas, but I have no idea what I want. Our price point is $400 or less. So, obviously D-SLR is out of the picture (pun intended). I want one that will be capable of taking good outdoor photos. A plus would be if it's capable of taking pictures of me/my team during cycling races (and not come out blurry, lol) as well, and I know point and shoot types aren't great for this, but I think some cameras have a continuous shoot mode? I've seen some cameras that have the capability of shooting video, but I'm not sure that is something that is even worth looking into. I have no idea of the zoom lingo. I know there is a digital and optical zoom, but really don't know which one I should be more concerned with. As far as megapixels go, I understand from reading that unless you're going to be resizing the pictures, the megapixels won't be the limiter. Anyway, I was hoping the collective knowledge of the COJ would get me started on my quest for a digital camera with some good suggestions as to a starting point for my search. Much appreciated! |

I've been looking at the Canon SX 20 IS, and the Nikon Coolpix P90. I don't know which is better, I've read poor reviews on the picture quality of the P90. I really like the larger LCD screen on the P90 as compared to the Canon. The two have the same megapixels and resolution, but the Canon takes video in 1280x720 whereas the Nikon only shoots in 640x480. BUTTT, the Nikon has a better optical zoom. UGH. I don't know which is 'better' or if I'd even notice a difference . . . . . |

No kidding? Do you have one that you suggest around the $400 price point? |

Subject: RE: Digital Camera Suggestions Digital zoom is in camera cropping, avoid it. While it looks like having 22X zoom would be a good thing, it's just cropping an image and making it larger. Optical zoom is what you should look for. I have a DSLR, you can probably get close in your price point. For carry around we bought a Nikon Coolpix 12 MP or so |

Ignore the "digital" zoom. My Canon SD990 IS has 3.7 optical zoom. Wish it could go further, but overall I am happy with my camera. You can check out my albums. All the 2009 photos are taken with the SD990 IS. All the prior photos are taken with the Canon A620 IS. |

Champion 5376 PA | Subject: RE: Digital Camera Suggestions Nikon D40 is around $400 and takes amazing pictures for the novice. I bought one for my wife last year and we absolutely love it. For her birthday, I bought her the 55-200 (I think those numbers are correct) lens. |

Well for me the SLR is a no brainer however the bigger cameras are not for every ones liking. If you are wanting a SLR style camera without the expense have a look at Panasonics Lumix FZ28 It has an 18x optical zoom and will record HD movie. Also the Leica lens will provide high quality images. |

A DLSR or the point/shoot? Depends on what you are using it for. If it's just for family snaps and the like, the point and shoots are great. To use a DSLR correctly will have a steeper learning curve, then you get into lenses, etc. If you are just going to use one lens, no point in getting a DSLR (IMO). a 9-12 MP P&S is more than sufficient to print out nice pics as well. Also, P&S slips into a pocket. Not so much a DSLR As for Canon vs. Nikon..... well, I am a canon DSLR shooter, and I know people take sides like PC v. Mac, but in all honesty 99% of people, including good shooters), aren't really going to notice a difference between the two. If you're talking lenses, then yes, there are substantive differences. Otherwise, choose one and go with it Edited by ChrisM 2009-12-07 1:54 PM |

Extreme Veteran 591 New Port Richey, FL | Subject: RE: Digital Camera Suggestions I'm going to buck the trend and recommend something in the $150-$200 range. If you're a photographer, the DSLR is the clearly superior choice, in the same way that a Cervelo P3 is the clearly superior choice to an entry level road bike for an experience triathlete. But since you don't even own a camera now, I assume you're a relative beginner. That said, save your money until you've learned enough to know what you want. My recommendations: Canon Powershot SD series ie SD1200 IS ($149) or Coolpix S series ie S620 ($199) Those links are just to the place where I've bought a few cameras in the past, and an example that MSRP is almost always a good bit more than what you should expect to pay. Finally, check out http://www.dpreview.com/ for in-depth reviews and side-by-side comparisons.

Veteran 320 Lost, Florida | Subject: RE: Digital Camera Suggestions check out some of the reviews on CNET.com. I have the D40 and it's a great camera but a little much to carry around on your honeymoon. Go to your local camera store, best buy and try some of the camera out. We had a Nikon P&S which took GREAT pictures but it took forever 16+ seconds to reset for another picture. That is something you'll want to check on. We decided to go with the Canon A540(?) took video and great photos. Most if not all P&S will have a continous mode on them that will allow you to take continous pictures that won't come out blurry. Good luck, buying tech stuff is so damn difficult. In the process of buying a HDTV and they all look the same except on the price tag. |

Elite 4344 | Subject: RE: Digital Camera Suggestions I bought a Canon G10 recently. It runs about $450. It has really good auto features plus all the manual controls as a DLSR. |
