Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15am. Put on all my race gear, which had been laid out the night before. Did my business. Walked downstairs to the lobby, where our hotel had laid out water bottles, granola bars, fruit, and coffee for all the racers who were staying there. The buses didn't stop in front of our hotel unfortunately - they just drove on by. However, we were able to walk down a block or two to the Sheraton Grand where we were picked up.
Event warmup:

We were on one of the last buses to arrive at the race site. Ran a couple times back and forth in my warmup clothes before shedding those for my LA Marathon Honda poncho which I wore to stay warm. I had arm warmers and gloves too, and those stayed on for the entire marathon.

My first marathon is finished! I stuck with my 3:30 pace group leader for the first 20 miles, running next to two of my friends. My plan was to take off and see how well I could run the last 10k after those first 20 miles. I was feeling really strong the whole way. I had forgotten my Endurolytes at home but a friend gave me two of his Salt Stick tablets. I probably needed 3 in the end. Took the salt tablets at miles 5 and 15 and gels about every 4-6 miles or so. Carried some thick Perpetuem in a bottle and sipped that with water every once in a while as well.

Overall, nutrition was okay. At mile 20, I still felt okay and did a 7:28 pace. It was probably too fast. Mile 21 took me 8:04 and Mile 22 took me 8:14. I was flagging and my legs started cramping. I was hoping they would hold up for the last few miles. I took in sports drink at the next aid station, but I was hurting. My pace group caught up to me around Mile 24 or so and passed me. I sucked it up and pushed myself back even with the group, which was much smaller by this point - I think others had fallen off too. It really was a mental and physical push to the finish for me. I ended up finishing 4 seconds or so behind my pace group leader and hitting my goal time. I was hoping to go sub-3:30 but I was happy with my strong finish.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my Endurolytes and take more salt in during the race. Also, not push so hard so fast at mile 20. I think I could have done a 7:50 mile then a 7:40, etc. and finished stronger. Next time...
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the med tent to ice my poor cramping legs right away. Took in a bunch of fluids and broth they had for me. Met up with my friends I had run with - we all finished within 60 seconds of each other. Went to Pyramid for lunch and beers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I hit the exact goal time I had been training for in my long runs and speed work, so I'm happy with how I finished. I could have done a little bit better with my nutrition and pacing at the end.

Event comments:

Great support on the course. Pace groups were great. A course really "made for runners"
