whoah! just got back on my tri bike for a good ride today. Those first 20 minutes or so brought back all of the old "terror" moments.

Just remember, as long as you don't death grip and you steer with your body not your hands, you are a LOT more stable than your mind would lead you to believe...

...I know it's hard to convince myself of that going downhill at 35+ ... the good news is... by then it's too late to back out!
Good Luck !!!

I hope everyone is doing well with their training.

carrie639 - 2010-04-01 11:53 AM OK everyone, going for my first ride outside on the tri bike . . . any tips, suggestions, don'ts, etc

A little terrified, but has to happen at some point and tomorrow is supposed to be perfect weather.

Was way too windy to even consider my maiden voyage.  When the weeds and trees are blowing sideways, not the best option for a first ride.  Maybe tomorrow or Sunday.

Did my first outdoor run today.  Thought it was a good temperature, but got hot very quickly.  Had trouble keeping my slower pace, was running sometime in the 11, 12 and 13 minute mile ranges.  Maybe that is what forced me into a run/walk towards the end.  However, the Garmin (first time I used it) was pretty cool.

Got a 3.5 hr bike ride tomorrow.  Hope everyone gets in some good workouts.

Sorry I've been out of touch for the last week or so.  Coming off nearly two solid months of travel, I needed a week or so to decompress.  I did try to maintain my work out schedule though.  Slowly building mileage for a couple of upcoming half mary's.  I've also been doing a lot of work on the trainer so when the weather is consistently better I can ride my bike up into the foothills east of Fresno and see what happens.

As for the swim, I did buy a decent training suit, goggles and cap.  I'm still trying to nail down some lessons with a coach that aren't going to cost me an arm and a leg or require that I be on the other side of town at 5:30am.  You would think that in a town as hot as this, and with as many backyard swimming pools as there are, there would be a ton of public swimming options available.  Not so.  The gym right down the street from where I work has an incredible pool, but no coach; although I can swim, I don't want to spend a ton of time wearing myself out and ingraining bad technique.  I have a couple of leads on coaches who offer private lessons.  I think if I can get a half dozen or so under my belt, as long as I'm pointed in the right direction, I can take it from there.  The beauty of the gym pool is that it's convenient from work AND I can stick to my morning run/biking work outs and do the swims after work!

Glad to see Spring is slowly coming to your parts of the world and that everyone is making solid progress in their training...

My training team called Endorphin Sports has been kicking my a**.  Its  a great group off people, but they work really hard. All week as VO max workout. Three days where you worked at each disciple at all out intensity with full recovery.  I tried the run workout on my own when it was 88deg and it was difficult.

Yesterday did a 58 mile ride with at 40 min. run (very nice day) and today is a 13 mile run.  This will be all by myself since I passed on the Easter morning team workout.  I've been struggling with some hip pain but I think it was due to bad bike form (letting my knee go out).  All and all the May 8 half IM is starting to look doable, but the next three week will tell.

Everyone looks like they're working hard and dealing with stuff as it comes.  Have a great Easter.

Finally did my first ride on my tri bike. First time down on the bars was terrifying!  One move too quick and down you go . . . Went through an industrial park a few times back and forth (flat and little rollers with some slight turns).  I felt better by the last time through, but just can't get my left elbow comfortable in the elbow pad, so my left arm in total is not comfortable.  This could become a problem cuz it means I am gripping the bar too hard to make up for it.  I have been fiddling with this since I got the bike.

Anyone else have this problem where one arm is in a different position??

Nice job keeping a workout schedule with so much traveling.  I hope you can find a good coach for the swimming. That will be a great resource for you.  I'm still trying to unlearn some of the bad stuff I taught myself.

Sounds like a hardcore group you've got there.  Nothing like a good group of people to get you motivated.

Hope the hip pain is nothing serious and goes away soon!

The good news is that it gets a little less terrifying each time you ride.  As far as getting comfortable it just takes some time.

I usually shift my arms forward or back a few inches every few miles so I'm not completely stuck in the same position the entire time.  Also, if things get too unbearable there are different pads available if you think that may be the problem.

It looks like they are going to be opening up the new mentor groups soon.  I'll be mentoring again so you are all welcome to stay if you like.  If not, I won't get too terribly offended.  Either way, I'll let you know when and where the new thread is.

Finally starting to run and bike again! (I thought I was going to turn into a Frog from all that swimming... although it has helped me a lot so it wasn't all bad) Although my Powertap's batteries were dead (doh!) and I had to get some new running kicks. (Defyance 3! Great shoe so far) Trying to keep my mileage split lower so not to disturb my knee again. Missed my race, but there's a couple coming up I'll take advantage of. Probably Rev3.

Hope everyone is doing great in your training!

Neal, I'm thinking of Mentoring this go-round, but if I don't I'd like to be in this group again.

I'm ready for a second round with this group...sign me up!   There's a lot of good advice here and it's a good group of people with different strengths and experiences to bring to the table.  I'm in.

Good luck with your group Chris!  You'll make a great mentor.  You have plenty of good knowledge and a positive attitude.  Feel free to stop by.  I'll be interested to see how the ironman training goes for you.

Good luck at Rumpus in Bumpass.  Some of my training team will be there look for the red uniforms with EF (Endorphin Fitness).  The head coach is racing Micheal Harlow, and he is fast.  One of my training buddies will be there too Charles Tucker old guy like me (>50) he is a beast on the bike and the run.
