so my dad is building a deck in the backyard and i'm helping.  i ended up hurting my back.  it's funny how i can swim, bike, and run forever and a day but as soon as i try to use a shovel all hell breaks loose haha.  i took yesterday off and i'm not going to train today either.  i'll try an easy workout friday if my back feels better but if not i'll rest again since my race is saturday.

just my luck!

1st triathlon is in the books.  time was 1:20:13 and i finished 44th overall.  4th in my age group.  the swim was a lot harder than i thought it was going to be.  i found it very hard to relax in the water but i guess that's just something that i'll get use to with time.  overall it was a great experience.  thanks for all the tips and i can't wait for the next one!!

so i just bought some tri cycling shoes on ebay and i think they are a little big.  i normally wear a 44-45 euro (depending on brand) and i read reviews saying that the particular shoe i bought ran a little small so i bought a 46.  i guess my question is how tight are tri cycling shoes suppose to be?  i know they should fit snug but i can easily move my toes around in these shoes.  any thoughts?

My last bike shoes were quite snug... then when it was hot  my feet would sort of swell up and they were really tight!! SO I got a 1/2 size bigger and they are almost too big.....so nope- I have no advice.... I guess better a little room then to have your toes hurt!!

Aright so question on HR. I took a ride yesterday of 75 mins did about 45 mins of that in tempo. I originally planned for those 45 mins to be at 160 but I could barely get my HR above 150 even struggled to get above 140 at times. It wasn't horribly windy, but there were some strong winds nonetheless. Was it the wind that kept my HR lower? Was I riding in too high a gear? My legs were never burning really but they could feel the workload.

This is the main reason I don't like training by HR and don't on running. I feel it becomes almost too obsessive to hit certain numbers and not pay as much attention to the riding portion.

Well this is the main reason so many people love powertaps.  I rode yesterday and thought it was pretty windy. I myself tend to not ride as hard into the wind....so haveing the PT too see that Im pushing the right amount of watts is a great tool.

Sometimes not hitting your HR can mean you are overtraining (doesnt seem like this is the case)  You maybe had a breakthrough and can ride harder at a lower HR, but you still should have been able to getyourHR up there.  YOu maybe are getting sick and your HR is being affected.

HR is agreat way to train but you acnt always rely on it 100%.  You can sometimes go by RPE.  Or even  mph/pace.

I mean it looks like you at least had a decent ride.

Id just watch my hr the next few rides and see whats going on.  If it continues to get where you want it maybe another LT test is needed?

Good info...the one thing I didn't mention is that when I ride outside for some reason I dont feel as if I push as hard as I do when I'm on the trainer. I can get myself to easily suck wind pretty hard on the trainer and yes I will breath heavily outside but for the most part when I ride outside I feel like maybe I hold back a little? I definitely hold back some when I ride in head winds.

It seems like you are not riding as hard outside- but you are... its just harder ona trainer adnyouare not moving forward. Moving gets rid of a lot of the sweatyouse dripping off while on the trainer!!

I actually produce more watts at a lower HR outside...most people do
