to the best of my knowledge I'm not pregnant... yet.

I'd like to do a half marathon in March. At most I'd be 12 weeks along... my best friend is getting married in May and doing this race as "her last race as a single girl." A few of the girls in the wedding party are running and I'd like to do it.

I KNOW to check with my doctor but I was wondering if anyone here had experience with running 13.1 at 2-3ish months.

Thanks

My wife ran 30 miles plus a week for her entire pregnancy. In fact she ran 7 miles the day before she delivered. The OB was OK with it(in fact encouraged it) but recommended later in the pregnancy that she keep her heart rate below 160.

Paula Radcliffe did something similar.

Here's a good article on it.  I know Runners World had an article on her as well, I'd have to search my archives to find out which issue it was though.

Best of luck!

Male run speeds increase significantly when they find out there may be a pregnancy.

The heart rate guide applies only to those who didn't regularly work out prior to pregnancy and to those that think they can ramp up fitness during.

Trishie, during pregnancy, you can maintain and do whatever you were doing before. Use common sense though...don't push through like you would prior and make sure that you are getting enough quality calories for both you and the baby. Of course, that all goes out the window for a high risk pregnancy or complications - but like you said, you'll have your doctor on board. Also, if you haven't already found your OB, then interview a few to find one that is an athlete like you.

You could always ask Bree Wee about it too. She was (unknowingly) a few months pregnant with her son during a triathlon. Bree is super approachable and friendly and would be more than happy to answer a few questions. www.hibreewee.com

The best thing you can do is collect the data and decide for yourself.  When there is a fetus involved EVERYONE is going to be conservative.  ANYTHING that could be potentially dangerous they are going to tell you NO.  Esp people who basically have no knowledge RE: the science and literature.

1-James Clapp from Case Western Reserve has done most of the good research RE: exercise during preganacy.  Put his name in your favorite search engine and go to town
2-There was an ask the coach section in a recent triathlete mag azine regarding this.  THey actually did a nice job and found Dr. Clapp and got his opinion
3-Most of Dr. Clapps research can find only benefits to exercising thru your pregnancy both for the fetus and mother.  There is better mother child bonding, the childern have lower body fat percentages than babies of more sedantary mothers, the exercising mothers lost preganacy weight faster and in general felt better post partum than sedantary mothers
4-ACOG has specific guidelines for exercise during pregancy which you should get from your OB/GYN
5-Your pre-pregnancy activity level should help guide your pregnancy activity level
6-There have been antecdotal reports of elite runners running thru preganacy with no ill effects to the fetus

Bottom line is that OB/GYN is our most litiginous medical specialty and no one is going to tell you go ahead and do ____ if they think it could potentially injure the fetus.  Its almost impossible to set up a study regarding the safety of anything in pregnancy due to fear of injuring the fetus and lawsuits.  As a consequence we are left with anecdotal reports of people who have exercised a lot during their pregnancies with not enough data to take a stand on and say "OK its safe to do X but not X+1"  The studies that have been done, as above, have really shown no ill effects to mother or fetus in a HEALTHY NORMAL pregnancy.

Hope this helps.  Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.  I'm a doc and, although not an OB/GYN,  had to write an article on the musculosleletal changes of pregnancy and exercise during pregnancy so I kind of had the topic thrust upon me.

No experience with running a half marathon at 2-3 months, but I DID have to wear a bridesmaid's dress at 5 months.  It wasn't pretty.  Just a warning for you!

I would say it all depends on how you and pregnancy get along. If you've got severe morning sickness and having trouble keeping food down you may find that the half is a no-go.

I haven't read any thing to say it's a bad idea. There are way more experienced people here than me (as i have no children and have never been pregnant) but some of the people I know who have had kids could barely keep food down in the first trimester so it's something to think about.

There's no harm in signing up though. There's no way to tell when you'll get pregnant. Happens quickly for some and takes a while for others. It's good to have goals so you don't get obsessed with it.

I thought this thread was going to be about how to get someone pregnant while running.  It was intriguing so I stopped in hoping there were diagrams, flowcharts and perhaps a video.

It doesn't put more stress on the back and legs with the extra weight running that late into the pregnancy?

Not meaning this to be negative, but more to say that you may have to play it by ear. I was miserably sick during my first trimester. Labor was a joke it was so easy compared to the first 12 weeks. Nausea basically every minute I was awake, puking in parking lots, at work, wherever. The other first trimester issue was how tired I was. I remember on the weekends sleeping 11 hours per night and taking a 3 hour nap on the weekends. Could barely keep my eyes open to get through a day of work. The second time I was pregnant these symptoms were much more mild, but the first time was a disaster. So if you get the go ahead to sign up, go for it. Just be ok with bailing at the last minute if you're not up for it.

We just had our first about three months ago.  My wife was pretty sick during the first trimester and into the second, so biking and running kinda went out the window.  Nevertheless, the only thing I recall (and didn't see it mentioned above) is that you may not want your core, and, hence, baby (well, fetus) temperature to get above about 102F.  That is pretty high, but obtainable during exersize.

Otherwise, why not?

I have a good friend who found out she was pregnant a week before IM CdA. Her doctor wasn't thrilled, but she did it, just more cautiously than she originally had planned. She's an ironman, and the baby is an adorable 3 year old!

As long as you discuss it with your doctor and get the go ahead, you CAN do it.  The question, as others have mentioned, is whether you will WANT to do it when the time comes.  The first trimester can be rough.

I have a friend who ran her first marathon at 12 weeks.

Gordo Byrn and his wife have written some in their Endurance Corner blog about exercise and pregnancy.  Go here: http://www.endurancecorner.com/  and search on pregnancy.  The search will bring up several posts about the topic.

Talk to a sports doc about it - and yeah, it'll depend on how you feel.  I did a sprint w/out knowing I was pregnant. She's now a healthy 4 yr. old   and did her first tri last year.

It all depends on how you feel.  You might be puking and tired during the first trimester which means you will have no energy to go for regular runs.  I felt pretty good throughout my pregnancy and ran until a couple days before my son was due.  Then he was 2 weeks late!  I tried to run him out, but it didn't work!

Anyway, listen to your body.  It will know what you can and cannot do.  Go ahead and sign up for the race.  Check out my logs from August 2008 to April 2009 to see how I handled working out while pregnant.  My son is now 8 months old and totally fine.  Good luck!

I have an 18 month old daughter and know that when I was in my first trimester, I actually felt pretty great!  Yes, there were some moments where I was just totally exhausted, but there were a lot of times when I really felt super.  So, it's just a really personal thing.  Old wives tales say that if your mom had super big morning sickness, then you will likely have it.  If your mom weathered pregnancy well and had no issues, then you may be totally okay too.  This was the case for me as well as several of my girl friends as well.

Sign up for the race and just know that you may either run-walk it, walk it or run the whole thing.  Being flexible is key.
