My Way or the Tri Way in Aurora, CO is a Sprint where you choose any 2 or 3 of the sports and do them in any order. So you can do a traditional tri (S/B/R) or mix up the three sports (B/R/S, S/R/B, etc.) or you can choose two and do them like a duathlon in any order (B/R/B, S/B/S. S/R/S, R/S/R, etc.).

I did the Swim/Run/Swim and it was such a blast! Really freaky running back into the lake after running the 5k!

Oh and they have an amazing raffle at the awards ceremony. This year it was for a complete tri bike, and last year it was for a pair of Zipp wheels.

Chicago Urbanathlon:  10-11 mile run total w/ obstacles...obstacles include 600+ ascending stairs at Soldier Field.

HUFF 50K (Huntington Ultimate Frigid Fifty), Huntington, IN:  This is a trail race which occurs in December (usually is snowing/icy/muddy) at a State Park in Huntington, IN...hilly and sometimes dangerous course.  Aid stations have coffee/cookies/soup...and the finish tent has numerous home-made soups and chili etc...
Really cool event...last year one runner got "taken out" by a deer who decided to "share" the trail...people slipping, sliding etc.  My wife purposely slid down a few hills on her butt sled style which was good for a laugh...
**I've only done one loop as part of a relay but many do the entire 50K despite the weather conditions.

Now that sounds like an awesome trail race. Hot soup at aid stations and rampaging deer, sign me up!

I want to do this, but I don't think I'll be up for it less than 2 weeks after Singapore 70.3:

I have not done this yet because I am a lousy skater, but someday - the Winterlude Triathlon - 8 km skate, 5 km ski, 5 km run

My favorite race so far was the Harbor Springs Coastal Crawl in Harbor Springs, MI.  You can pick between doing either the 1, 2 or 3 mile open water swim in Lake Michigan.

This year, the 3 mile race was cancelled due to rough waters...so I did the 2 miler.  What a beautiful town, clean and clear water and tons of support from the locals on their big boats.  I had a blast and can't wait to do it agian next year.

They also have a 10K OWS race the day before...but I'm a ways away from being able to do something crazy like that!

the bear - 2009-12-19 10:43 AM Haven't done it but always wanted to: Holy Toledo Triathlon . "Just like a triathlon, only harder" is one of their slogans, "The cowards won't show, the weak will perish" is another. Evidently I fall in the former group of no-shows. Maybe this year...

Past races have included a hot tamale eating contest halfway through the run.

Is it just me or did anyone else think of this thread after reading this...

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=150441&start=1

Whenever someone says 'hot tamale' I am reminded of this... I think it scarred me a little.

Wild west relay with 6 people on Friday through Sat.  200 miles total, each runner ran 34.6 milesish, then On sunday I did the 5430 long course in 5:20.  We won the wild west relay and were 3rd overall only having 2x12 man teams beating us.

Toughest weekend I have done.

One of my favorite topics!  This year I was lucky enough to do these:

Ragnar Relay - Great River in Wisconsin and Minnesota (HARD, grueling runs and super tiring with very little sleep)

Burrito Union 5 & 10 Hour tri - I did the 5 hour, you string together as many sprint tris as you can before the cutoff.  Putting on the wet suit for all but the first swim was... a challenge.  And the lake was cold enough that you really needed it.  Technical trail run, too.

Living History Farms 7 mile cross-country run in Des Moines, IA.  Described as a "very technical cross country run with 8 creek crossing".  You get the idea.  We were a little dirty at the end   Probably the "funnest" race I did all year.

Just signed up for the midwest race.

I have never done the race before, but any race with free beer and a viking helmet can't be all that bad.

I did a similar one in the N. Georgia mountains called the Lake-to-Lake Relay.  It was a blast.

Is there a link to this somewhere? I couldn't find it.

The Bear is a 5 mile run to the top of Grandfather Mountain, NC.  It takes place in July during the Highland Games.  The Bear is as tough as it sounds, but the Grandfather Mountain Marathon takes place two days later if you need more punishment.  The Bear has an awesome atmosphere and the scenery is spectacular.

x2 on the living history farms cross country race. what a blast. Des Moines also holds a race called the dirty duathlon, which is an offroad duathlon. Entire race course is single track. pretty awesome race too.

But i would have to say the race I have been eyeballing the last couple years is the trans-iowa mountain bike race.

http://www.transiowa.blogspot.com/

The Trans-Iowa Mountain Bike Race is a non-stop, self-supported, solo competition along the gravel roads of rural Iowa. Competitors must carry with them ALL necessary equipment. Trans Iowa V6: Here's a reminder of what Trans Iowa is.........We are informing you all that are in the event that if you don't agree that you are on your own, that you are responsible for yourself, and that this is being undertaken of your own volition, then don't take the start!!!

oh I just made a list of all the races I want to do...Muddy Buddy and the Naked 5k and Krispy kreme challenge are all on the list!

Escape frorm Alcatraz was the coolest "regular" tri.  My other favorite race I've done is a ride and tie.  1 horse, and 2 riders/runners.  If you're not running, you're riding.  The horse has to go the whole way. We only did the 20 miler, and that took us 4.5 hours.  A LOT of fun.

Me riding above, and then running.  The trails were beautiful!

mount hood scramble:

from the website------->

This is what we are rockin'

This event isn't designed for the front avenue runner -- DO NOT expect some cutesy lil' downtown 5k, or some wussy boy trail-run.  This mother is packed with adventure: hills, creeks, rock, dirt, heavy brush and more.  Wear clothes you don't mind ruining, and bring band-aids if you are concerned about some bleeding. As for aid stations... there is plenty of water on the course, but I'd think twice about drinking it... especially after you waded through it.  As for the distance, well it’s about 6-miles or whatever "K".  We'll time you, give you awards, probably some watermelon, and hell, we may even throw a few beers -- all you have to do is finish.  Think you’re up for it?  We are ready for you, and to quote Shakespeare’s Henry V, "he who shed his blood with me, shall be my brother" See you on the hill.

Probably the James River Scramble (http://www.sportsbackers.org/events/riverrock/scramble.htm), a 10k in Richmond that is based on the Richmond Xterra run leg. As I recall, in addition to single track trails, hand-over-hand climbing some very steep stairs, scrabbing up rip rap under a bridge, and hopping over railroad ties, we spent a good deal of time sloshing from rock to rock through the river. By the time I went through, the rocks were extra slippery from the fast runners' muddy shoes, and one rock was so tall I couldn't climb up it, so had to navigate around it to get back on the course. The river was low the year I did it. I can't imagine what it's like if there's been a lot of rain.

When I finished, I was completely covered in mud. They had a hose so you could clean off. Food and entertainment were great. A fun, fun race.
