Anyone doing this?  I'm registered and will be traveling from Chicago if anyone has any tips as to where to stay, etc.

Thanks.

I did it last year but will be skipping it this year.

I stayed at the Milburn:

242 West 76 Street
New York, NY 10023
(212) 362-1006

http://www.milburnhotel.com/

It is only 4-5 blocks from Transition and they have a 25 meter pool around the corner. Also, you are right off Broadway so you can catch the 1 train from 79th or the 1,2,3 from 72nd.

If you're not going to stay at the "official" hotel, I'd definitely suggest staying somewhere close to transition, as opposed to further downtown.

Have you been to NYC before? When you say "etc" do you mean you're looking for other non-race-related tips?

I'm racing as well.

jmk - I'm racing with my buddy this year and am trying to figure out the best place to stay for the weekend as it relates to getting to and from the race start/finish (I've been to NY a few times but never did this race).

Thanks for info.

Listen to Jon and Jonah, i stayed at the host hotel last year and regretted it. Read all the race reports from the past few years, there is a lot of good info and thoughts in them.

Be ready to walk....alot

i will not be there this year, we have our home clubs (Team Mossman) race in my hometown the same day (Mossman Sprint, Norwalk Ct)  so i will be doing that.

Best of luck to everyone, i am back now from my hiatus and hope to see you all soon.

I would second or third the suggestion to stay near transition because after the race, you will have to either walk from central park to transition, or if you're lucky, get a cab. You probably will not want to ride your bike through the city, so being able to walk the bike a few blocks back is a nice treat.

Check out the Beacon Hotel and Belleclaire. There is another one on 77th, can't remember the name.

Other tip, check out the run course, especially the north section on foot.

I have a question regarding the bike.
How do you get your bike from the airport to the hotel, to the race........?
I am staying at the Hilton.

I think it will be up to you to transport your bike to your hotel and then you could either ride it to transition, take a cab, or hop the subway. Its a very short distance from your hotel. Another option is to use http://www.tribiketransport.com/who I remember had a tent near transition last year and takes care of everything for you as you just pick/drop your bike off near transition.

Thank you.
Do the cabs have a way to haul your bike around?
Does anybody have any feedback about Tri Bike Transport.
It sounds like it would simplify the bike dilemma.

If you take your front wheel off you should be able to fit your bike in the trunk/or inside the taxi....you could ride upfront in the cab even though some taxi drivers dont like it. Some cabs are vans/SUV and would be plenty of space. Do a search in the forums for tribike transport...I am sure you should find plenty of info on them. I have not used them so I can not comment on them. If you dont find any info.....just post a msg in the general forum and I am sure plenty of people will give you info.

I'm headed up there from Chicago and plan to use TriBike Transport. Considering the traffic in NYC, I figured riding it over would be a bad idea. The sheer convenience of TBT makes it totally worth the $300 in my opinion. I've never used them before, but there's no breakdown and rebuilding of the bike required and you don't have to worry about moving around NYC with your bike, especially after the race - just take it out of transition and drop it off at their tent/truck nearby.

I've taken off my front wheel and fit my bike in the backseat of a cab. It's not ideal. Considering what you'd pay to pack and ship it, TriBike sounds like a bargain to me.

That depends on your budget! The NYC triathlon is an awesome race, but not cheap, even for NYC (outer borough) residents. Most locals I know stay at home and wake up at 4am to get there on time! If you're already paying for a hotel, it's probably cost-effective for you to stay in Manhattan.

I did the race last year and used TriBike Transport.  They were great.  Easy pickup on Saturday for a quick spin through central park to make sure everything is working, and then just check it in at transition.  I also shipped a gear bag with extra CO2 and bike shoes/helmet/extra stuff.  Very easy. Post race you just drop it off again and are done.  They were conveniently located between the red and yellow transition areas.  I will be using them again this year.
Looking forward to this race again.  It's a well-run, fun event.

-Ben

I live on the Upper West Side and am participating in the NYC Tri.  I would recommend staying at On the Ave (77th and Broadway).  It is a nice hotel and very near the transition areas/riverside park.

Has anyone ever rented a bike for the NYC Tri?  Any recommendations?  Any experience in doing this?  How does the price compare to just shipping a bike?

I did this tri last year and signed up again, but I'm moving to DC, so I'll now be coming from out of town, probably by train or bus.  I want to minimize my travel hassles (plus I have a very low end bike so it's not like I'm giving up something grand for the rental bike).

Quick question re transition for people who did this race in previous years.  I know they assign you to either red or yellow transition.  Are you assigned a specific spot within that transition?  if you get to pick your spot, where should I try to get one?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly you have a assigned spot within the colored transition. So you would go to your color and look for your # and that is your spot.

You will be given color coded stickers for your helmet and bike that will have your assigned number on it. The transition areas for your color will have somewhere around 60 racks with the assigned matching numbers to the participants bibs. The numbers are sequential within yellow with the pros at the front so lowest numbers near the exit of transition. The stickers are on both sides so you should be alternating the racking of the bikes to max the space. Yellow is a longer run from the water so be prepared to run 1/4 mile.

Just saw this:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/25/sports/25triathlon.html

NYC triathlon is going to a lottery for next year's race.  I think this is welcome news since it sold out in minutes for this year's race due to the number of people trying to register at once.  The only reason I got in was because I volunteered last year.

Wave times posted!

http://www.nyctri.com/Assets/2010+Swim+Wave+Times.pdf

Looks pretty similar to last year, waves go off from from 5:50 to 7:57.  Also for everyone's reference, the current charts predict a favorable current from 5:20 to 11:36 (with maximum at 8:24).  Crossing fingers for no jellyfish.
