Subject: When Did Everything Get So Expensive?
Getting back into mountain biking I picked up an entry level Specialized. Not a bad bike, but not high end. I figured I'd upgrade the fork. May be a Fox or Rock Shox Reba. $500-600. The bike was around $700. May be a nice Chris King wheelset. Hubs are what $400?
Back in the day I had the high end Merlin with White Industries, XTR and Syncros. Man I need to buy some lotto tickets.
Maybe at races they should have price/age groups. A $$$$ cap. I want to do an Xterra this year.

I know what you mean.  I have 3 bikes cross country, down hill and time trial plus my wifes bikes.  none of them are top of the line but none are low end either.  I could have purchased a new car for the price of just three of them.  plus tag on maintenance, which i do myself...WOW.  I dont want to think about it anymore...good luck on Xterra I think I like it better than road tris.

My view is if the performance of the bike matters, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

The is not always valid. Ever ridden a true downhill bike down a technical trail? Then you will know how much the bike matters.

Some excellent deals can be had on previous years' forks etc. There usually aren't huge leaps in technology from year to year, and if you can get over the stigma of being seen with last year's colours/graphics on your fork you can get something decent at Jenson, Pricepoint etc.
