Subject: Upgrade my bike or buy a new one?
So i have an old (10yrs) bike I pieced together years ago when i first got into Tri's.  Its an alum. Specialized road frame with a Kestrel EMS carbon fork. Mostly old 105 components with tiagra brakes (slowing down is overrated) I do have a set of clip on syntace ero bars, with road handlebars and 105 sti shifters. Stronglite head and stem, control tech steatpost with a flite saddle.

I'd like to upgrade my components to new Ultegra stuff, and maybe switch to visiontech style triathlon bars.

I could upgrade components or would i be better off just buying a new bike. I really like the QR line, something in the $1500 - $2000 range would be great. maybe i'm just trying to talk myself into buying a cool new bike?

I guess i could even sell my old bike to offset some of the cost.

any thoughts??

If you're actually looking to gain something, what is it?

If you're looking to upgrade just 'cause you wanna upgrade I can understand that completely but then you really don't need us to validate that

It does sound like it'd be cheaper to just buy a new bike with the stuff on it than try to upgrade what you have to get there. Plus you get all the newer technology stuff on the new frame at the same time.

Yeah, thats sort of what I was thinking. I wanted to upgrade components to gain quicker shifting reliability and maybe a little weight loss on the bike. But if I spend a grand on new parts, I might as well just spend $1600 on a bike.

I've got a nice tri bike but I do believe I am not now nor will I ever be at the point that I would be held back by a decent steel framed 10 speed with shorty clip on aero bars. Toys are fun, though.

You sound like a perfect candidate to be patient and score 1-2 year old bike via craigslist, for about 50 cents on the dollar, you can get a lot of bike for 1600.

That would probably be my best option. Ill hold out for a while and see what pops up.

It doesn't sound like you need a new bike...but it's always fun to get one!

I'm upgrading to a new tri bike, and there's absolutely nothing "wrong" with my current one(except for the engine).  But if a new one catches your eye and you feel like spending the cash, then go for it!

What's your current bike situation at home? Do you just have the one bike mentioned above? Either way, there is a formula to tell you if you should buy that bike or not. It's mathematical and proven...

the formula is this:

N+1 = Number of bikes you should own (N Variable is # of bikes currently owned).

So, if you use this proven mathematical formula, you should buy the new bike...That's taking into account the fact that you have the $$ for the new bike...

I was faced with a very similar situation, and a wise person suggested that I dedicate my old bike to the trainer and buy a new bike... that's what I'm going to do
