Whoooo Hoooo! I have so many questions, I don't even know where to start.
Biggest question right now...How hard is it to get a taxi in Cancun big enough to take my bike box (2 bikes in it)?
Should I try to call ahead to arrange it?

There are taxis all over, vans and cars.  Theyre more thanhappy to take your pesos  ....  but if you want to be sure, youcan arrange ahead of time,  The other option is the bus from Cancun to PDC

Some of the taxis are vans so you should be fine.  Both my husband and I raced it last year- we had 2 bike cases and we didn't have any issues getting a cab to fit all of our stuff.

We flew into Cancun and pre-arranged a personal shuttle to drive us from Cancun to the ferry docks in Playa and the same on the way back.  It was very easy to arrange and it was nice getting off the plane in Cancun knowing that a shuttle was waiting for us.  It's more expensive than the bus, but it's quicker and very convenient.  It all just depends what you're looking for.

Do they mind getting tips in dollars?

Dealing with Pesos is one last thing I don't want to have to worry about

No- they will take whatever bill you give them and are more than happy to receive American money.  They just don't take change- apparently it's really hard for them to exchange American change into pesos, (almost impossible from what our one cab driver told us) but the dollars aren't an issue.

It's pretty American-ized there.  We hit up the grocery store "Mega" to pick up bottled water and a few other things.  All the grocery prices are in pesos but when you get to the checkout the registers automatically convert pesos to american dollars so you know how much it will cost you.  Pretty cool.

The only thing you will want to be aware of is when you go to pay someone.  The prices they will sometimes give you is in American dollars and they give you change back in pesos.  Just want to make sure the change back in pesos is the right amount in American dollars so you don't get ripped off.  That's when it helps to know the conversion   To know if you get the right amount of pesos back.

Hey guys... I'm flying in on Thursday into Cancun, and have a car waiting for me at the airport to take me to Playa for the ferry.

My first Ironman... I'm a little spooked.

Any calming words?

There was a new law passed not long ago that limits the amount of US cash that people can change. So, you may find a bit more resistance or worst exchange rate if you pay with dollars. I recommend that you get cash from a bank ATM (not the little ones in hotel lobbies). They will give you the best exchange rate for cash and you can use your credit or debit card for most payments.

Hope that helps

Good luck to all the IMCoz peeps!!  Think I might register for next year if registration stays open long enough for me to raise the dollars for it.

My guess is it will be open for a few months. I did not sign up for this race until June 11th. Do not wait that long though!

Re pesos v dollars.  Its a better bet to pay in pesos, and its no big deal, very easy to figure out.  exchange rate around 12 to 1 now.   Most places give you a bill in pesos as well as in dollars, you can use either.  Frankly, its easier to use the pesos rather than figuring out the conversion, how much for tip, etc.

Depends whether you get dollars or pesos back.  some places weve gotten dollars, some pesos.

only use atms attached to banks or in stores like Mega.  There have been issues with atms stealing cards.

if you have time, go into the neighborhood behind the main square.  the cruise ships tell people its not safe so they get little business, bt its totally safe.  just went back there to a little ice cream store.  4 double scoops for $4 or so (56 pesos)

Restaurants to hit among many others
Kintas  - fantabulous, mndivers favorite restaurant, i know why
Primas.- on the run course, top of El Cantil condos
Le Chef - very good italian

On Sunday night, its the traditional family gathering in the town square.  if you finish in time, take a walk thru.  last night they had some sort of Ms. Coz pageant.

todays weather - partly cloudy with periods of rain squalls

I don't know about calming words. How about:
slow is smooth, smooth is strong, strong is fast?
I say that to myself on the swim and run to keep from getting too excited.
Feeling underprepared and prepared enough at the same time.
Suprisingly worried about the swim, even though it tends to be my "best" of the 3 pieces.
I want a spot near TJ in the swim so I can swim in his draft...for all of the 10 seconds that I can keep up

Our flight leaves at 12 on Sunday, so its possible i might go to the swim start, but likely not, as its probably going to be quite a hassle.  Had I planned it better I would have stayed

I am a bit torn, part of me is ¨better them than me.¨ part of me kinda wishes I was doing one (or, at least back in IM shape...  ok, even Oly shape).  But this trip is my return to diving, so I am enjoying that part of my life instead, one that I left behind for the most part when I started tri training.  Trying to get some balance back and all

BTW, triathletes are pretty darn easy to pick out in a crowd......    Really, you dont have to go for a training swim on the surface interval between dives...  its a little obnoxious frankly  {smiley face}

Not sure if anyone else registered and got this e-mail from AS deporte, but I think it is a pretty useful plan of events and is much more printer friendly.

Race report – Cozumel, Mexico – Nov. 28, 2010
Please notice that this report could change in portion or in its entirety by Nov. 29, 2010.

We arrived at the biggest Mexican island of Cozumel directly from Toronto with our friends Liz and Erik on Wed. Nov. 24. You could tell that the Ironman event was keeping this heavenly place captive. The buzz was definitely in the air and it smelled like Orange Gatorade.

We spent 4 great days at the Wyndham hotel enjoying the sun and the light breeze. Breeze that was soon to turn into a nightmare while riding on the east side of the island on race day.

Race day could not come soon enough and after all preparation and setups were done I found myself in the Caribbean waters of Chankanab Park.
I heard the Mexican national anthem and for those who know its lyrics, it prepares you for battle in each and every verse of its 10 stanzas. (Luckily we only get to sing two), so combat-ready I was as I looked up to see the dolphins leap out of the water in a show-off stance on why they prefer not to ride the 180km and run the 42k’s.
As I am floating in these turquoise waters I look back at the 361 days of commitment after I signed up for this venture and with seconds to spare I list all my lifestyle changes since day one:

- I became a better person by the disciplined obligation of becoming lighter, faster and stronger.

- I lost the 8 pounds that were lingering on me for the last 10 years.

- I gave up on dairy products and found solace in almond and soy milk.

- I gave fruits and vegetables a chance. Now I am as green as the grinch but I do enjoy Xmas a lot.

- I only drank beer while watching Montreal advance to the NHL conference finals last spring.

- I tweaked my aero position at least 20 times on my bike until I found the “one”.

- I never judged a bike by its looks. While racing, I have passed P4’s the same was clunkers have passed me.

- I encouraged competitors to keep on going when they seemed lost.

- I thanked every volunteer who offered me a sip of water.

- I prayed for windy days when on bike training.

- I hoped for flat tires so I could practice a fast change-up.

- I waved at all triathletes. (They always wave back)

- I tried to bonk so I could feel how much I had on the tank.

- I stopped buying Gatorade by the bottle. Now I buy the powder and I have kept 500+ bottles off the landfills/recyclable units.

- I went to bed early. (Even on Monday night football)

- I swam close to 200,000 meters and I enjoyed every single painful lap thanks to Coach Doug. Could you believe his website tag-line is “Swim or Die”?

- As I could not fit in my wetsuit anymore (too big) I challenged the frigid waters of Lake Ontario. You can save up to a minute in transition time.

- While running, I based my training on form rather than speed.

- I ran by the beats of Rossini and Vivaldi the same way I ran with Ministry, Linkin Park and Suicidal Tendencies.

- I waved at all running triathletes. (They always wave back)

- I ran the Toronto “Spit” a hundred times. It is exactly like Cozumel but different.

- I walked the Dane almost every night. He knows I need a 2km stretch-walk every evening to wrap things up for the day.

- I thanked Kim for her support every time I left her alone for the morning, evening, weekend, month and now close to a year. Trust me; she will have me back on Nov.29.

Then I heard a loud blast…

TIME TO GO…TIME TO PAY BACK.

Not sure yet. We're planning to do the open water swim from 7am to 9am and then I have to put my bike together. I would guess early afternoon but we have to fit in packet pick-up and a pre-race meeting. Is that vague enough?

I'm just down the street at Occidental Allegro. I arrive friday morning, so if it's in the afternoon I might have time to put the bike together and meet up. Post it up if you get a better idea.
