This is probably a dumb question, but does anyone wear a speed suit at this race?

do you mean a tri suit, or do you mean over a tri suit?

if you mean over no, i would not, unless you are doing a relay.

Yup, definitely going!  This is only my second race ever.

One nice thing about Athens OH is there's plenty of hills to play on, so I should be able to stay in the saddle on my old road bike while I'm getting passed by y'all!

Any other Athens people going?  I think some of the university triathlon team will be there.  I'm technically a member, being a returning grad student, but can almost never make their training times.

over a tri suit....

my logic was, a) i think i could shave off at least 10 seconds over 400 m, and b) the tri suit pocket in back catches water.....so id swim in tri shorts, then have to put on a tri top wet...and thats no fun... i think it would be quicker, but i also think it might look silly.  but people do wear them at the masters meets i swim at...

bananatoes - 2010-04-06 6:13 PM

You can crash here if you would like. Queen sized bed and half bath await you in the palatial Bananatoes finished basement suite. Plus that is where the big TV is. I live probably 40 min away from Oxford (because there isnt any direct way to get there from anywhere). Just south of Dayton right off I-75. Only caveat is that the 3 kiddos will immediately seize upon the chance to jump on and wrestle with a new face.

If you dont mind that would be a huge help, i promise not to duct tape any kids to walls or anything........

Suggestion to first timers, practice some transitions as they can be stressfull if you do not know what to expect.
For T1 - practice going from barefoot to cycling shoes (and socks if you wear them) and helmet and walking/running a short distance and mounting your bike.
For T2- practice stopping your bike and getting your feet out of cages/unclipped and jogging/walking a short distance.

Repeat each item a few times pretending you are in a race. I would bet you will learn a thing or two on what NOT to do by running the simulations a few times. 15 minutes in practice will give you confidence and wisdom. But it wont make you better looking.

Dear Weather Gods-

Please be kind and don't make it rain on Saturday April 17, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to complete my first Triathlon without having to worry about wet roads and wiping out on the bike. I know it is not "if" I wipe out on the bike, it's a matter of "when" I wipe out but I would really like it if that "when" isn't during my first triathlon. Thank you in advance for your consideration and cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,
D. Diamond

I'm a little unclear on how a pool swim works, are you just in lanes?

Also, this close to the race, is it worth trying to learn a flip turn?  Or can I just touch the wall and turn around?

I'm already spending a lot of time in the pool this week trying to reassemble my stroke after the TI drill sequence (right now it's laying in parts all over the workbench and half the screws rolled off the edge), so not sure how good it would get past "legal".

You will jump in the pool (feet first) then swim 50 meters. You will touch the wall, push off, swim UNDER the lane line and swim another 50 meters. Repeat until you come to the wall in the last lane, exit the pool and head to T1.
Forget flip turns. I flip when I swim, but I do not flip during this race. It's much too crouded.

No need to worry about crisp turns, you can hang on the wall and rest if you want to. I do flips turns about half the time in training but unless the conditions are good (not crowded real near near me and I am close to the lane line) I dont plan on doing them. The few seconds I might gain are offset by the seconds lost/heart rate increase of doing one wrong or coming up under someone or the lane line. Just relax - its going to be fun !

Hey all, first time Tri here for me. My dad and brother and I decided to try doing a triathlon, and this one seemed like the perfect first race for all of us.

I am pretty pumped that its Saturday, and I just read all 11 pages and all the race reports from last year. Seems like this hill will be interesting to attack. Also a little worried about my swim...considering all these stories I hear about lane clogging and what not.

guys, this totally sucks but miami is out for me.
I cannot afford to drive back there for this race and then back again in a few weeks for the half (50 bucks in tolls sort of wrecks your day).

I"m very sorry and will meet up with you guys soon. I am planning on coming back to ohio for a few weeks after our season ends here in june or july to race/train with people as well.
