It is not clear what the cost savings is, though ... does anyone know what they typical cost is to ship back to/from an event or is it distance specific? With an airline you must breakdown the bike a bit though, enough to put it in a case, and you have to worry about the airline misplacing it. Tri Bike Transport is more reliable, but for if you are just talking dollars and cents airline is cheaper. Plus you get to look like a badass walking through the airport with a bike box and an Ironman Finisher shirt on. |

Tri Bike Transport is more reliable, but for if you are just talking dollars and cents airline is cheaper. Plus you get to look like a badass walking through the airport with a bike box and an Ironman Finisher shirt on. And Tri Bike Transport tends to cater to larger cities. I haven't lived anywhere with a participating bike shop...EVER. It isn't an option. |

Regardless of cost, if you aren't driving to the race or riding there yourself, I think getting your bike to a race without having to break it down is worth spending some extra $$$. I like my bike fit and I REALLY don't want to mess/tinker around it with by putting it back together, especially before a big race. I am using tri bike transport for the first time for IMNO 70.3 and there is a huge amount of weight off of my shoulders knowing that my bike will get there hastle free. |

I recently bought a bike case but I'm just going to St. Pete for a few days, I didn't want to hassle with dealing with the bike box, renting a bigger car and having to get this big stuff to the airport and out myself. The offer is indeed $40 off the regular price and is good until February 1st. Further good news is that given the problems they have had (and customer complaints regarding Active.com fees) they are moving their credit card processing in-house. That ought to occur by April or March of this year. As to TriBike Transport or not, it really is a good deal if you have to ship a bike to a race. Thre might be some airlines that "only" charge $100 each way ... but then you have to break down your bike to the point that it is less than 85" in circumference. This means taking the handle bars off and seat post out- two essential fit points of your bike. Not only do you have to put your bike back together but you also have to buy or borrow a bike box, break down your bike, cart it through the airport, pay the ridiculous fees, help the guy open/x-ray the box, hope it makes it onto the plane (I was told that some planes will only hold so many bike boxes, if there are too many then they put it on the next flight ... and this is particularly true for smaller airports), wait for the it at the oversized luggage counter, cart it to the hotel/rental house, reassemble and then take it to the race site. And that is just one way. Alternatively for TriBike Transport, you take it to metropolitan LBS, take off the pedals and then go pick it up at transition. When done with the race, you take it from transition to the TriBike Transport area in the expo. Got to tell you, I like their business plan ... and did I mention how nice they were? Very difficult to find folks with that kind of customer service. |

Also, US Airways used to ( not sure if they still do) offer free bike vouchers if you book your flight through a special IM website. My husband and I used the vouchers to bring our bikes down to Couzmel for the IM and we had ZERO issues with our bikes and didn't pay a penny to fly with them. It's definitely work checking into if you already own a bike case or can borrow one. Also, we didn't have to open our cases ever for anyone to check when we flew to and from Mexico. And our bikes were the first pieces of luggage off the plane and were already on the luggage belt when we arrived in baggage claim- both times. Our normal luggage is what we had to wait for. I had a great experience flying with my bike- my case only weighed 35# with my bike in it and was easy to carry. We used pike packworks- they are soft cases but work awesome- no harm done to the bike. We had to remove the pedals, both tires, the seat post and seat, and then disconnected the front brake cable to secure the handlebars- we never had to full remove them which made it easy. With the bike case design we didn't have to totally remove the handlebars so it was easy to put them back into the right position. Just make sure you double and triple check your bike once it's put back together. I didn't double check mine and had mechanical issues during my IM  But in the end it all worked out.Edited by runnergirl 2010-01-20 8:22 AM |

Sure getting through the airport was kinda of a pain with my bike box and suitcase but for $200 I'll manage just fine and need to save money where I can. If you do curbside check in that's a moot point, which worked for us on the return trip from B2B. The 15 minutes to load the bike and wrap in bubble wrap and installing handlebars and my seat post is really not a big deal. I have a small piece of tape on my handlebars and seat post so getting back to the same setup is easy enough. I ended up buying a bike box but had offers from some BT'ers that live close to me to use there boxes, and I've all ready offered my box to another local BT'er for there trip to IM Florida. So the box will get used and save me money when I travel to future races and hopefully when the wife and I get to travel a bit more I'll be bringing the bikes along and there will be no transport services for that. TSA did a fine job of opening my box on there own and they only checked it on the return trip from what I could tell and there note they leave behind and I was never asked to open it for the airline or check in folks.

I totally agree. If you pan to fly a lot with your bike in the future then investing or borrow a bike case and checking it as luggage is definitely the cheaper route, if you can get the cheaper bike rate with certain airlines. It can be an inconvenience having to fly with it and put it together and take it apart, but in the grand scheme of things it's really not that big of a deal if you know what you're doing. I think it all just comes down to personal preference and how much you want to save. For my husband and I do a bike transport to IM CDA it will cost us $500. If we checked our bikes with SW Airlines it would only be $200. So right there we can save $300. If we can get another bike voucher with US Airways then it will cost us nothing to fly with our bikes and we can save $500  But first we have to find out if US Airways offers the free bike vouchers. Has anyone used them lately? |

I used tribiketrans for CDA last year and all I'll say is that being able to get your bike out of transition right after finishing, and walk it over to their tent less than 100 yds away, hand them the bike and not have to worry about it for a week to pickup at my LBS was worth its weight in gold...just sayin' |

Spending $50-$75 more is worth the peace of mind knowing your bike will arrive to your race destination in one piece... and knowing you don't have to put it back together. In my opinion, TriBike Transport is worth every penny. In fact, I refuse to ever fly with my bike, after the horror stories I have heard (bikes getting lost and arriving LATE are a common occurrence). If I can't drive to a race or TBT can't carry it for me, I'm not doing the race. |
