I'm still new to this whole training thing with my first race next month and I need some advice. I live in Southern California and we have been having heavy rain all week. Yesterday I did my 42 minute swim when the rain was somewhat light but today I'm supposed to do my long swim (70 minutes.) The forecast has a 100% chance of heavy rain with wind and pobably thunder all afternon into the night. I don't have a problem with sucking it up and getting out there but my gym said they ask people to vacate the pool when there is a chance of lightning, etc. I was also told I'm risking getting sick if I go out and swim during a crazy storm because of all the crap in the pool. The thought of missing a workout, especially swimming, drives me crazy since it's my weakest link and I'm so nervous about my race being so close. Weather for tomorrow and Friday looks like it will be the same otherwise I would try to switch some workouts around.

Should I try and swim? Should I take it as a rest day? Should I replace it with something like strength training? I feel good today, not really in need of a rest day at all. Suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated.

p.s. I already searched for a local indoor pool with no luck.

There is little you can do to replace a lost swim. I agree you should swim unless/until they close your pool.

It's an outdoor pool?  (based upon the "all of the carp in the pool").  If no lightning and as long as the stuff in the pool isn't chairs, bleachers, or a honda accord then swim!

I'd say don't swim. Missing a single swim will have little to no effect on your race. Getting zapped by lightening or getting sick from the pool will hurt your race
I'd run or bike inside.

If you can gain access to an indoor pool that might be an option (Not sure how many indoor pools are in SoCal since weather's so nice year round).  Some places have day passes (punch cards like YMCA etc.) for a few bucks.

HTFU. Get out there and get those laps in until you feel the burn.

JK, I agree with the others that have said don't risk getting zapped. Not a pleasant situation and would definately take you out of any tri's in the very near future. While I understand missing a swim bites, been there and got the t-shirt, saftey comes above all else as you can replace a workout, however, you can't be replaced.

Hang in there and just double up the next workout.

If your pool water gets you sick due to rain, there is something seriously wrong with that pool

Swimming in the rain is one of the few pure pleasures in life.  I get out if I hear thunder, but otherwise I swim, doesn't matter how hard it is raining

Never heard of that before.  Couldn't be any worse than a race I did a couple of years ago during a red tide outbreak when they used a front end loader to plow the dead fish off the beach between starting waves.

Living here in the lightning capital of the world, the lifeguards are very careful about evacuating the pool at any sign of lightning and they wait 30 minutes after the storm is clear of the area before re-opening.

Can't control the weather.  I'd just plan to go and swim and deal with things as they occur.

They got rainwater in my pool!

Seriously though, unless the pool is like an hour out of your way, I'd drive out and find out what the weather is like BEFORE deciding to cancel.  The only sure thing about the weather is that it will change.

I decided to bag my swim this morning on the way into the pool, it is raining pretty hard.  I read this thread and decided to head on over to the pool.  It was awesome swimming the rain.  Hope it rains tomorrow.

Absolutely!

Swimming in the rain = awesome
Running in the rain = awesome
Biking in the rain = the suck

After seeing the rivers and lakes that triathletes compete and train in I have to laugh at the thought of a bit of rainwater in the pool being something to worry about.
