Regardless of what you choose, make sure you train the same way.  Going sockless in a sprint?  Then run and bike during training without socks.  The first time I went sockless on the bike or run, ever, was in a sprint...it was raining out, to boot.  You might think a 45 minute bike and 22 minute run wouldn't be long enough to do the damage that it did to my feet, but they were TORN APART.

As far as the choice itself, I'd say go with whatever is comfortable unless you're going for a podium/PR/win/etc.  If you're ultracompetitive, no socks; if you're looking to win the race, no socks, etc.  HIM distance and up, though, I think the time savings are so miniscule you're better off protecting your feet as much as possible.

I always wear socks, reguardless of the race distance. Diabetic feet need protection! The one time I went without socks (because I forgot them), I bled so much in my running shoes that I had to throw them out.

I roll my socks on in T1. Wouldn't race without 'em.

i cycle without socks (you should smell my bike shoes) and run in socks - by then your feet are dry and there is no issue with getting them on.  i'm going to try to find sneakers that don't rub and start training to run sockless, though.  i think the key is in what SHOES you are wearing, not tough skin, if you want to run sockless.

I believe this.  For me, I have wide feet, so Zoots won't work for me.  And most running shoes have a lot of seams and areas for potential hot spots, so I think I will be sticking with socks for some time.

wide awake - 2010-01-21 1:39 AM I always wear them. Have them waiting in transition rolled up like a condom, run up and roll them on. From now on in longer races I think I will put on a fresh pair between bike and run as well, see if it helps with blisters.

That's my method as well.  No problems getting them on wet an it only takes about 5 seconds per foot.

X3. I'd rather take the few seconds to put on socks than deal with blisters later. I also use low-cut socks rather than longer ones.

CLEARLY I Had to post on this thread (See screen name)  I ALWAYS wear socks to run.  I am another wright socks fan.  I had horrible hiorrible blister problems and they have been my salvation.  I usually train with socks on the bike but rarely race in them.  Yes it takes a few second to put socks on in transition but I gladly trade 30 seconds of sock application for having to walk most of the run due to blisters.

I'm new to triathlon, but have biked (usually w/o socks) and run (usually w/ socks) for years.  Now that I'm swimming a lot (w/o socks) Wink, I'm wondering what most triathletes do.  Is it common to not wear socks, as it is tough to put them on with wet skin after the swim?  I'd like to start running short runs sock-free so that I can toughen up my skin, if that is the best way to do it.  Any thoughts?

X2.

I ran sockless today.....in a pair of shoes in which I had never done so before.
my feet hurt. and its only because of the shoe.

so if you plan to run sockless. check the shoe before you buy it.

yeah.. I'm trying to decide whether or not to go sockless in the future, but I do think that my current shoes have a hot spot right on the top.. plus my orthotic inserts are of a material that might make things totally horrible running without socks.

So do the sockless people just put baby powder in their shoes and bodyglide potential hotspots?

Hey all,
Great thread. I don't wear socks on the bike, but usually throw on Balega's. They are a little pricey, but easy to get on and comfy.
I run longer distances in Injini socks (little glove-like socks) but can't be bothered to waste the time in T2.
I haven't found shoes that work for me sockless on the run, but may try the body glide idea.
