Subject: Ironmen with Asthma

I know you're out there: Ironmen who have asthma. I'm doing IMLP this year and am wondering, How did you carry your rescue inhaler during the race? I'm leery of just putting it in a tritop pocket because it may fall out at some point. I have an armband holder for it (kind of like those ipod holders) but that will block my number on my arm, plus it will chafe like crazy over such a long distance.

Also, did you wish you had an inhaler at any point during the swim? Any thoughts on that would be really helpful. Thanks!

Kelly

I am a lifelong asthmatic. Thankfully, it is well controlled at this stage of my life.

I carry a rescue inhaler in my bento box on the bike. For the run, I carry one in my racebelt (spibelt).

I have never felt any asthma symptoms while in the water.

I always have  my inhaler under my wesuit at the ankle. It's tight enough there to hold it  and fortunately i've never had to use it during the swim. A few hits from the inhaler just before the swim and i'm good to go. Had it with me for the entire swim at IMFL and didn't need it.

I always have a backup inhaler in transition just in case I lose it in the swim.

On the bike/run, i just keep it in my tri top pocket.

I've been thinking about getting this for run-only events when I have a running shirt w/o pockets:

race belt with asthma holder

Cool, thank you! Great advice from both of you. I like the "inhaler in the wetsuit" thing. I normally never need it when I'm swimming, but in the melee/excitement/freakout of the start, you never know and I'd rather be prepared.

I like that race belt thing, too.

Thanks to both of you.

I have excercise induced asthma and while racing LP in '08 I had the worst incident I've ever had. I've since learned rain and 60s is a trigger and I was out in that weather for the whole race.

I had my inhaler with me and it didn't help even though I was walking. Finally after about 15' minutes I was able to breath normal and was okay. From that point I opted to just walk as I didn't want to get pulled off the course and not finish as I was afraid in unknown territory for me and didn't want another incident.

I bring an inhaler with me in bike, in transition bags, on the run, but not on the swim. I know a couple of BT friends that have found cold water is a trigger for their asthma so they bring one in their wetsuit. I haven't had cold water bother me so I don't bring one in the water.

I have asthma, and use an albuterol inhaler occasionally.  If you use the inhaler right before the swim, you really shouldn't need more during the less than 2 hrs. you'll be in the water.

I'm not all that aerodynamic, and wear a small fanny pack on bike/run, in which I carry inhaler.

Asthma wasn't an issue for IMFL '08, might be for IMLP '10 with colder water, maybe wet weather.

My wife does the same.

I have asthma; honestly not sure if I'm going to leave it for the swim or stow it (either ankle or tie it to the zipper cord) for the bike and run I'll have it in a race belt.

I know this topic is a few weeks old, but thought I'd add this:

Last year, volunteered at IMLP, and one girl who came in through transition from the bike to the run realized after she had handed off her bike that she had left her inhaler in her bento box. We had to scramble to find the bike and the inhaler.

Being an asthmatic myself (exercise and cold weather induced), I'm planning on stashing inhalers in ALL my transition and special needs bags and on the bike. I figure it's better to have too many of 'em lying around than not enough. Just a thought.

(I generally don't take my inhaler with me when I swim, as I've never needed it while swimming--which I've read has something to do with taking shallow breaths...also, albuterol has the nasty side effect of making my heart race, something I will not be needing any additional help with for the IMLP start...will take some Advair before the race and maybe one hit of albuterol earlier in the morning).

You can bring an inhaler in the water?? Will it still work after that? Who knew??

Yeah I didn't know that either! Awesome info everyone, thank you, it's great to know there are other people with asthma out there. Thanks for the advice/support!

I have asthma as well. I carried albuterol wtih me in my bento box and in the pocket of my tri top during IMCDA. I, also, suggest keeping one in your special needs. I had no problems during CDA with asthma but would have had I not been prepared. That's how it works, right? I've also been faithful to using Advair every morning and evening. It's been awesome. Had no issues unless allergies were high. That stuff is a gift from God.

I've been a lifetime asthmatic too, but have mostly outgrown the allergic aspect to it.  I am also using Advair and can sometimes have it exercise induced or in cold weather.  i've never taken an inhaler on the swim, but if I were concerned, I'd just use it before the swim.  I do take an inhaler with me on the bike and run in my tri top and have had to use it on occasion.

I keep my inhaler with my in the bento box for the bike and then a second one in the pouch of my fuel belt for the run.

I have another with me at the swim start.   I have had asthma since I was 5 and it is still bad.  It has not stopped me from finishing IM races!!

I too have sports induced asthma and cold water is one of my worst triggers.  I find taking my inhaler just before the swim and forcing myself to start the swim slow and steady seems to work.  I'm also planning on carrying one on the bike and run.

I pop a couple of primateme tablets (over the counter asthma med) before I run,bike,swim..since its ingested into the blood stream..last longer IMO....I used to carry an inhaler in my wetsuit, bike and on the run..have completely ditched it for over a year now..I still have asthma but the tablets work fine for me for the duration of up to a HIM so far...
