Subject: back to back centuries.........help??

So I am planning on doing a local event here at the beginning of June. A 100 mile ride to a neighbouring city. Then you consume massive amounts of dinner.......get some sleep.......and get up the next day and ride the 100 miles home.

Now its not a "race". They call it a tour. But nonetheless I want to be prepared.

How should I train for this? And yeah yeah..I know all about "ride lots" . But other than that......

How much mileage should I be putting in now and as the date comes closer?
Lengths of long rides?
ANY other advice??

Thanx muchly!

You just need to be getting as many miles in as you can really.  Ideally you would build up to 100 miles + in training but that is not really neccassary if you don't want to/can't/don't have time/have other goals.  I would say you need to be comfortable with 75mile+ rides though.

A one off 100 miles is not all that hard really and it's always possible to push your body really hard to complete the distance.  However, you can't really afford to be in a situation where you are completing the first day right on your limit otherwise getting back on the bike the next day and doing another 100 will be very difficult.  So, I think you need to be at a fitness level where you can complete the first day without pushing yourself too hard.

Having done loads of double centuries (and longer) I would say the key things are:
  1) Log the miles
  2) Ramp up the distance of your long ride as much as you can
  3) Do back to back 3h+ ride (perhaps the day after some of your long rides you could do 3h+)
  4) Get your nutrition right, especially on the first day
  5) Ride within yourself
  6) Accept the fact that your legs may feel dead for the first hour or so of the second day

Good luck and enjoy, it sounds like a good couple of days out.

What helps is to try to do back-to-back long-ish rides so you get used to the feeling of waking up on day two just a little bit sore and tired and still having to do another century.  Since both of your rides are centuries, you really don't need to do back-to-back centuries for training, but maybe 100 and 62 or 75 and 75....stuff like that.

When I was training for my really long rides (400 miles, 750 miles), doing hard back-to-back centuries helped me immensely, among other things.

Did this as part of IM training, an informal group of firends with a couple people driving SAG.

Just get the miles in, both for your legs and your tush, which will hurth the next day. Honestly, I felt a little better on day 2 than I did on day 1, until I hit mile 170 or so, Then I got cranky

I've done this. There's a ride from Seattle to Portland every year and the Cascade Bicycle Club puts it on. They do an excellent job. Anyway, you might want to check their website as I'm sure they have lots of resources and probably some training plans too.

Sounds a lot like an MS150 tour.  If you are just doing this for fun, plan on making use of as many aid stations as you see fit.
Don't feel like you have to keep up with groups where you feel like you are pushing hard.  You have plenty of miles ahead.

Make sure you take in adequate calories and fluids while on the bike.  During the afternoon/evening after the first ride, make sure to take in plenty of fluids - not just water, but Gatorade, G2, or similar.  If you are not peeing pretty frequently that first evening and if your pee is dark yellow, you are way behind on hydration.

Allegedly beer is known to be a good fluid replacement/pain killer after a long ride and is generally plentiful at events such as the one you mentioned Smile

If your longest training rides get up to 60 or so miles, you'll be fine.  If you're looking at "racing" the event, that is a whole nother matter though.
