I am trying to build my 2010 Tri & Running schedule for 2010. Last year I did several running races ranging from 5K's-1/2 Marathons and 2 Sprint Tris. This year I plan on doing both and building up to a few 1/2 marathons and Olympic Tris.
What are the best ones in Michigan? What are your schedules looking like?

Are you new to Michigan?  Have you done any races around here?  How far are you willing to travel?

I'm not a long distance runner, but my sister did the Brooksie Way Half Marathon (usually the first Saturday in October) and I've done the 5K.  It's a beautiful, but challenging, course through Rochester Hills.  It's put on by Crim Foundation...which is very well regarded.

The Martian Marathlon (and half, 10K, 5K) is very popular.  This one is on April 1st.

I'd suggest searching through the race reports from last season to read reviews on the local races.  There are several road races, triathlons and swim races up north, near Traverse City and Petoskey, that I've heard great things about.

Did the Novi Tri because the Millineum Park Tri  was cancelled the week before.  Training for Racine 1/2 Ironman in July.  Doing the 5/3 River Bank Run at the beginning of May and looking at some Olympic Distance races in early June.

Thank you! I am trying to stay in Michigan and I have seen many races listed on the Web. Last year I did the Bluewater Tri & The Autumn Tour Tri as well as several local running races including the Detroit Free Press 1/2 marathon. The year before I did the Brooksie Way. I agree it was a great event.

Am am mostly intesrested in learning more about the Michigan Tris and which one are the favorites. I plan to build up for the Nation's Tri (Olympic) on Sept 12 in Washington DC.

Any advise is appreciated!

Ann Arbor seems to be one of the BT'er favorites...it's a sprint, but with a killer bike and  a 5 mile trail run.  Haven't done it (because I'm scared), but TONS of BT'ers do it every year.

Other than that...I can't offer much advice.  I like Hawk Island, but it's very much geared towards beginners.  I've done Big Fish and it's very popular with BT'ers, but I didn't care for it so much.  That one offers both sprint and olympic distances.  I just thought it was kind of boring...out and back swim, bike and run.  I like a little variety.  : )

I've stayed very local besides that...Island Lake Triahtlon, T-Rex Tri series.  Looking at Clark Lake or Waterloo along with Kensington this year.

I do have the stretch-goal of completing the Breakwater Tri next fall...and am looking at Autumn Colors.  What did you think about those races?

EDITED: I just realized you did BLUEwater, not BREAKwater.  How was that one?

I enjoyed both the Bluewater and the Autumn Tri's. They were both well run and and offered both Sprint and Olympic. It rained during the Bluewater and the Autum Tour was a bit cold in the AM but I had a good time at both and enjoyed getting into the Tri sport.

Ann Arbor's a good race although it's weighted towards runners. The swim and bike are basically sprint distance with a 5 mile run at the end.
Motor City is OK but it's got a split transition and requires you to do 4 1/4 laps on the bike. It's not marshalled well and a few people only do 3 1/4 laps.
Big Fish is a good race .... although I take one of the previous poster's points about out and back runs: you either like them or you don't.
The "State Championship" course at Pontiac Lake is also quite good. However, once again it's an out and back course and we never seem to have much luck with the weather: it's either cold or raining or both.

Steelhead HIM
Maybe Hawk Island
Maybe Ann Arbor tri
Maybe T-Rex
Maybe Novi tri
Maybe the one in East Jordan
Maybe one out of state
Maybe Chicago
Probably Craig Greenfield tri

Steelhead's the only one set in stone. Of the others, I'll probably do 3-4. I MIGHT do a couple road races. The problem is, this is going to be a very busy summer for me. Hard to fit races in.

Have you done Craig Greenfield?  I look at that one every summer...I grew up in the Clarkston area and seems like it could be a neat course.  Did you like it?

I liked that it was for a good cause! And it was pretty small...less than 500. It was pretty well organized. They had yummy healthy treats from Whole Foods afterwards. The course itself left a couple things to be desired. The worst part was the swim because the lake is about 1/4 mile from transition...over a paved run path. So you do get to transition? Barefoot? That's what some people did...and they looked unhappy. Flipflops? That's what I did. People that have done this tri before set up a little footbath about 100yards from the beach, with a towel and their run shoes. Smart. The bike course was pretty good. It was a nice out and back. Coming back is fast because going out was gently sloped upwards. There were portions of the course that were open to motor traffic, but there was never any issues. The run course was ok...not very scenic, parts of it over uneven sidewalks which really isn't that big a deal, I'm just nitpicking.

Overall though, it was just a lot of fun! Good people, good cause, somewhat late in the season...it's a nice way to wind down the race season!

As of now, the only tri I have scheduled for this summer that's in Michigan is the Steelhead 70.3.  I would just search active.com and then just reference the races reports on BT to get a feel for it.

The Grand Haven Triathlon.  Grand Haven is a wonderful community and this event in July features both an Oly and a Sprint Tri.  The swim is in Lake MI (weather allowing).  That's the variable.  Two years ago the event was converted to a dualthon because of 3-4 foot waves.  Last year was perfect with just enough swells in the water to let you know you were in big open water.  Much better than an inland lake.   Starting a tri just after dawn on the beach of a big freshwater lake is a great feeling.  This event is also USAT sanctioned.

You should try to fit it in your schedule.  The Grand Haven Tri is well run, a lilttle congested at the transition zones, but aren't they all?  After the swin you run about .25 miles (not quite) up the boardwalk the bike is a nice roller with a few turns and the run takes place mainly along the Grand River .  Grand Haven is a tourist town, so lots of gawkers wondering what we're all about.  The swim is my weakest part but that's what makes this race for me.  Nothing like a big open water swim with the potential for swells or waves.

3/15 - Corktown 4mi
4/10 - Martian Half Mary
5/21-23 - Triple-T Ohio (R)
6/6 - Ann Arbor Oly-ish
6/20 - Big Fish Oly
8/1 - Craig Greenfield Sprint
8/28 - CRIM 10 Mile
9/10-11 - Highlander Cycle Tour (New York
10/3 - Brooksie Way Half Mary
11/7 - NYC Marathon (New York)
Sept- Dec - Tailwind CX

Ann Arbor is a tradition at this point...great race on an interesting course, especially the trail runs. Big Fish is a great race, too, if you're OK with 3D as the race director. I've concluded that 3D does very well at this race, for whatever reason. Craig Greenfield is a very neat race in Oakland county; very accessible and well run.

Steelhead is your 70.3 option in the state; with good weather, it's a good race. Not great, good. With lousy weather, it turns into a bear very quickly. I used to be a fan; now I can take it or leave it.

I haven't run Island Lake and Hawk Island, but have heard fantastic things about them.

The only two races I'd shy away from are: Motor City Tri (due to logistics, marshaling, race organization - they're still sorting this race out, maybe in a couple more years they'll have ironed out the kinks) and the HIM in Monroe (organizers have blown it 3 years in a row .re bike course - bad roads, people getting lost, construction, traffic).
