Just a money grab by WTC... nothing more.

WTC will buy their own insurance and cut out the middleman - USAT.

I don't understand what USAT has to do with qualifying for Kona.

Don't the USAT sanctined events nationally have Kona slots for AG place finishers...in various quantities.....Don't many people do the local events trying to get one of these conveted spots so they can go to Kona?

Most people do Ironman North America (IMNA) races in order to qualify. USAT is the company that insures most races. Plus they have a uniformed set of rules.

Interesting. I always assumed they just went hand in hand.

IMNA just announced the new company that will take over the insurance and rules (Global Tri Company Inc.) They have Philadelphia Insurance Companies providing the insurance for the races. They were a new sponsor for 2005 so this was something that was in the works for a while.

This seems to obviate USAT.  IMNA sells out all their big races.  Most people (IMHO) join USAT for the insurance - heaven knows they aren't really in touch with the AG athlete, as far as I can tell.  So, if you do short races I guess you'll stay in USAT and if you do long races you'll be the newest member of GTG.  Kinda sucks if you do both.  I think this will greatly diminish the influence of USAT.  It may be the stupidist move the organization has ever made.

There are no USAT races in San Diego now that the California Half is a GTC race. Most race directors around here choose to use another insurance company, they train their own refs and the rules are pretty much the same. They already factor in the $9 a race (or whatever it is) to our race fee so that is one less thing to think about

well, don't you still need to place in USAT sanctioned events if you want to get a pro card? or is obtaining status as a pro racer going to be calculated some other way?

not that i ever have any hope of getting a pro card, mind you, just thinking about where USAT comes into play.

Can you only be pro if USAT says you're pro?  I doubt IM pros will have to be USAT pros.  Just guessing though!

Yeah, I'm not sure how the whole pro thing works, but it seems that you need to win X # of races or place in the the top X places in a certain # of USAT races. I would think that this will shake up the whole pro race. I imagine you would need to a USAT pro card if you are doing some non IMNA races then get a GTG pro card if you want to compete in Kona.
This should be an interesting year
