Subject: Keep at Training Log!!! You'll thank me later....

I have been registered here on BT since mid 2005 and didn't really begin to keep a training log on here until Jan '06. Since then with the exception of a few days here and there I have either had a brown (redish brown?), yellow or green square everyday since. Every so often I take a look back at my training from previous years to see what progress has been made, what training worked and what didn't, and the overall mood during certain times of the season.

I was looking back at last year's logs because I felt like I was behind in my training compared to last January. In fact the opposite is true, my runs are at a faster pace and a lower HR than last year and I have been much more consistant swimming compared to this time last year as well.

The lesson from all this is take the time to fill out your training log everyday. Not only will it help those of us on here who give advice on training, but it gives you the athlete a benchmark to measure yourself against 2,3 or 4 seasons down the road.

I promise you will thank me for this later

The log is one of my favorite parts of BT.  I started doing it on Jan1 so it'll be fun to see how much training I do this year.

I use the log on MapMyRun.
Great to compare yr over yr and see where your @ (IE: HR vs speed/times, etc) compare to last year, etc.

I love the logs too, especially the part where you can look at monthly mileage.

And, it's a good motivator.  Sometimes I go ahead and do my workout just so that I have an excuse to write about something.

Yup, my training log keeps me (somewhat) honest. Except over the winter, of course.

Ditto on the training logs! I started at the beginning of 2009 and now am using all of the data to piece together how I've given myself a stress fracture! Hopefully I can avert disaster in the future by comparing training intensities.

The training log here is an awesome resource. I checked and I have been logging my workouts since August of 2005. The most compelling reason to do this is that is hard to know where you are going without first knowing where you have been.  Your logs provide a road map of your fitness improvement - and proof positive on race day that you put in the work to expect from yourself a great race day (or, in some cases, the reason why you did not!).

With the exceptions that you can count on one hand, I have logged something every day since.  As posted above, it keeps me honest, accountable and motivated - as I know that my BT friends will be checking up on me (and kicking me in the arse if I slack too much).

Inspires are a powerful motivator. Those here on the Georgia forum ought to try to leave 2 to 3 inspires a day for their fellow Georgia athletes ... just checking on someone is a great way to keep someone motivated - especially during these cold winter months.

Bingo! The log definitely keeps you honest, and shows what you have actually done. There are so many times where you might think you have put in a monster week/month, and after a review you realize your training is not up where it should be. Or, you think you are putting in 15 hour weeks, but upon review they are more like 8-10 hour weeks.

Plus, as stated you know your BT friends will be checking and let you know if you are slacking. There have been so many long runs/rides that I almost bagged but didn't because I knew I would hear about it. Thus, I pushed on.

The logs are awesome - Sometimes the logs are both the cause and the solution to the stretches when I feel like I'm in a rut.. It was kind of like discovering the Rosetta Stone way back when I stumbled on BT - Just an embarrassment of riches for a tri newbie...My feeling about BT years later is that the forums are a nice distraction from the day, but the logs are what can make you faster.

I will take it one step further.  IMO, the best feature is the route history.  Most of us run the same routes over and over and over.  In the case of my long run on Sunday, I recalled running that route about a year ago but I couldn't quite remember when or my pace.  I plug it into the route machine and it produces my history.  I think that is one of the awesomest features.

I am a total data geek so I can look at the graphs and plot 4 years worth of training in various different ways.

You know how some people are list makers who take satisfaction in crossing something off their list?

I'm one of those people.  When I was focused training, I'd have a little calendar I'd write down what I wanted to do that week for training and then what I actually did.  The training log is even better because your friends can see what you've been up to and can offer feedback and advice along the way.

I had no clue people actually used it, nor did I use it, until Justin (activejustin) gave me a hard time about it....Thank you, Justin.

I love the training log on her!!  I like to see PEACH and the colored graphs of each sport.  And it's cool to be able to see what others are doing as well for motivation.

I just discovered this site about a year ago and started logging all my workouts.  I'm looking forward to seeing 2010 vs. 2009.

this has been the most valuable tool in my training by far. I like to look back and track progress, moods, volume, etc. I also urge everyone to fill out their race reports. It is nice to look back and relive some of those moments

I love the log and I hate the yellow boxes!

But the inspires have actually helped me to make some great tri-friends that extend well beyond tri's now. In the beginning its weird, receiving and sending inspires to new friends, but next thing you know you feel a bond/connection.....

Ive never tried the routes Dollar. I need to check that out...

Amen to that.

The pressure of the public log often is what gets my butt out there or even keeps me from bailing when the workout is sucky.
