Has the iphone really been an overwhelming success?

How would you define "overwhelming success"?

8.7 million units sold last quarter...

Thanks for the info.  I really was asking that as a question.  I think I only know one or two people who have them.

That's why I asked how you define it. If it's by the people you know that have them, maybe not. But I'm sure Apple is happy with what it's done.

If pressed, I could name a couple dozen people that I know have them. Maybe it's because this is pretty heavy AT&T country.

i know quite a few that have iphones, and they claim that having one has "changed their lives."  seriously?  it's just a phone.  but yes, it is very successful.

The issue with the Kindle/Nook/Sony Reader is the screen. They are black and gray, dull, no color, no potential for advertising, graphs and charts, difficult to browse, small screens, they are really just text delivery devices. I've read some reviews say it's blazing fast. I think alot of people think they don't need it but they will eventually. It's more than a reader, it's a personal portable media device.

And then see where the trends go, how it is being used, then it will take off ... Or not .... (IMHO )

Yeah they'll either be geniuses again, or it will be another Newton...

It seems to come down to book reader quality and the ability to have a good book reader AND a internet/gaming email device in one...instead of just a book reader.

etc.

Is there a reason these "reading applications" aren't usable on laptops/netbooks?

I was under the impression and I freely admit I might be wrong, but it was the e-readers screens are quite different than laptops, computers and even the iPad due in part to the refresh rate.   That's why I didn't think the iPad is a good substitute for reading, unless you can adjust that.   Hopefully some of the true tech peeps can set me straight.

I like how they are dealing with publishers though, I guess there will be an iBook store like iTunes.
I was also under the impression that Barnes and Noble had bought up the patent/lincense on the different formats for e-books to ensure there wouldn't be formatting issue's with their Nook.   A few friends of mine with kindles will have issues with how some books are displayed

Not all that excited.

Tablets have been around for years, good for some functions, not others.  To make it functional you have to buy more accessories (apple made only of course...)

I would probably pick up one of the HP netbooks first.  They are smaller, cheaper and provide more functionality.

I've thought of a potential use for this for me: kitchen device.

There's an area in our kitchen between the pantry and basement doors that I've looked at occasionally and thought "That's where a tablet computer should go. Cut in a recess with an outlet, maybe drop some Cat5 from the office above, figure out a way to secure the tablet that allows it to be easily removed and put back...".

I've envisioned the tablet being used to display the family calendar, lists, notes etc. but also to grab off the wall for recipes, checking movie times, adding movies to our NetFlix queue.

The main barriers have been the cost of tablet computers, the form factor, and the fact that all current tablets are just far too much computer for the way I want to use it.

Assuming that someone comes up with a wall mount accessory that works the way I want it to (easy to grab and put the unit back with zero chance of it taking a dive to the floor) this could be ideal.

Most people right now can't see the potential of the iPad...but they will eventually.

I see this as long as the support is there, being the applications.

If there is the mass support, then it will have an edge on the competition.  Just like the iPhone.

But I think this one will take longer.
