Subject: Chocolate milk v. Chocolate soy milk
I've read many an article on the recovery benefits of chocolate milk(due to the carb/protein mix, etc.) & use it regularly. I'm curious if there's a functional difference between using milk & the soy milk/hemp milk alternatives. I checked the carb/protein mix on each & they seem reasonably close, but is there anything else to consider in terms of vitamins/amino acids/whatever?

soy milk contains a faster digesting protein, basically similar to whey.  The casein in the milk digests slower and is incorporated in to the body more efficiently.  Too much amino acids too quickly and the body will just burn them off as fuel.

Is there a taste difference?  I've only had soy milk a small handful of times.  All I remember is not liking the taste.   But I don't remember what it tasted like.  Does the chocolate flavor mask the other taste?

There definitely is a taste difference, but I think you'll like the chocolate version of Soy.  I've read good things about the vanilla flavor as well, however, I'm not a big vanilla person.

I drink skim milk, taste obviously isn't a high priority for me.

Could you rephrase that? The first 2 sentences make me think soy milk is a better option, but the 3rd seems like a contradiction.

Most soy milk tastes a little nasty to me as well.  However I have discovered the brand Silk to be not that bad at all.

I think (maybe) Bioteknik is saying if you are looking to build muscle, drink cow's milk. If you are looking to replace lost carbs, drink soy milk.

Hopefully he'll get back on this thread and clarify, though, cuz I'm not exactly sure I translated that correctly.

i think in simple terms what he is saying is the cows milk is acting like sugar vs whole grain carbs.
one is going to burn up much quicker (those are two extremes for the example, but thats what i think he is trying to say).

To paraphrase Lewis Black:  "There is no such thing as soy milk; it is soy juice, because there is no soy mammary that the milk comes from.

I love chocolate milk.  So much that, after a brick on Friday evening, 40 mile bike, 3 mile run.  I had a bowl of Rasin Bran Crunch with chocolate milk.   Don't know why, just felt like it.  It was delicious.

If I had breasts, I'd never leave the house.

I have read several articles that males shouldn't drink soy milk due to the amount of estrogen it has in it.

I believe south park did something similar to this, although their study was based on a male assuming a vegetarian diet, rather than soy.

I would assume the results would be similar. Unless of course your lactose intolerant. Then you might have some anti-body that supresses the unfortunate side effect.

Thank you for posting this.  My 19 month old son drinks soy milk because his little belly can't tolerate cow's milk.  He was on medicine and special formula as an infant.  Now to look for other alternatives.

Slower is actually better for protein digestion (if you were only going to consume one type).  Fast digesting proteins like whey and soy are good for stimulating protein synthesis, but the slower casein is better at inhibiting muscle catabolism(and cow's milk has both whey and casein, which is why it outperforms soy).  When too many amino acids from the fast digesting protein hit the bloodstream, the body starts to metabolize them instead of using them to build/rebuild muscle tissue (which is constantly happening).   Cow's milk protien is 20% whey and 80% casein

Rice milk gave me some really serious gut trouble, not sure why, but it was worse than a super taco wrapped in a  megaburrito, wrapped in a , well you get the idea
I just started on soy in the last few weeks, havent had any symptoms yet, but I cant stop thinking about shoes, oh well back to cows milk.
