FurnaceM3 - 2010-02-25 10:10 AM Just signed up this morning.  Definitely excited and am just looking to finish in a decent condition.  Planning on doing the full IM next year in WI so this is one of the final baby steps.

Time to get busy...

Your registration is complete!
that is what it said.....after I pushed submit on active for Ironman 70.3 Racine!
I think I am going to be sick!...in a good way, let the journey begin.
Look forward to chatting with everyone and bouncing thoughts/training off of each other.

Kim...ha...I felt the SAME exact way...I still do EVERY time I think about it...I'm a betting woman, and I'm gonna bet I get completely nauseated about 2 minutes before I get in the water...ha!

FurnaceM3 - 2010-02-25 2:44 PM Yea....I'm a little further out at a Super 8 (about 4 mi. West of the race).  The Radisson right off the lake is booked (which would have been nice since it's close to the race).

I too will be at the Super 8.  It was only $60 a night when I booked.

Just registered, needed to beat the rate increase and save that $25.  If I had a HRM on it would be beeping like crazy right now.

I'll be driving up from Florida the week before to get ready. I grew in the area so it's going to be nice to get back home to see family and do this race. First HIM.

If you buy or rent a wetsuit go full sleeve... it'll be chilly.

I have a sleeveless wetsuit; any chance in using that one, or should I start saving my pennies for long sleeved? I understand the water temp can vary, but not sure if even the warmest is warm enough for sleeveless.

That is a really tough call.  I live on Lake Michigan on the Michigan side.  Last year the water temps went from 72 to 52 in two days.  Good luck with your decision.

Wow. Sounds like a long sleeved wetsuit as a backup would be smart since water temps are so unpredictable. That's a good thing to know this early on - thanks.

I have done the sprint the past 3 years (the day before) and the water temp hasn't been above 60...it's colder than a mutha you know what.

I think it was last year when I got in to "warm up" before the heats went off, and someone said, "Has anyone seen the penguin?" I almost started crying it was so bad (think it was 53) and then last year, somehow, same temp, I just sucked it up and went with it.

Well, I've only got a sleeveless and have no intent on spending money on another wetsuit.  Time to HTFU.

Sleevless suit is better than no suit... rub some vasaline on the armpits and try to warm up quick.

Now that the weather is finally starting to warmup who wants to roll the course with me later this month?

I also only have a sleeveless so we shall see how that goes.

I have never swum in water as cold as this so...could you give me  quesstimation on how long it takes to truly warm up?  I mean it will be 80degrees or warmer race day, but the water will be 55-60.  How long before that water feels like  85?

I swam in Lake Michigan for a tri in July last year.  The water temp was 66.  I don't really remember how cold it felt.  There were many people will full,  sleeveless, or no suit at all.  I think just trying to stay focused in the huge waves kept my mind off of the temperature.  Be sure to practice in some rough water.  Let's hope for high 60's and calm waters.

Maybe we can organize some "first 1/2 IMers" rides???

I plan on riding the  course a few times and would definitely be up for a BT group ride.

This is also my first HIM and indeed, it will only be my second triathlon (I'm planning on doing an Oly in spring).  I'm doing it simply because it is the closest 70.3 to Chicago. I had entertained thoughts of doing Steelhead, but that falls on my bday and I figured that if I bonked or performed poorly it would be a pretty rough way to spend a bday.

As for my goals, I am doing this first and foremost to get myself fit.  Performance is also a top priority- I will be racing and have a certain time that I will be trying to crack.

Someone mentioned that the run goes through a zoo.  I did not know this...if its a hot day, can you imagine having to run through  pockets of elephant dung stench?!  Seems like a good way to get participants to puke...

Hi Guys!

I am in again.... this will be my 5th time doing the race... did it  2006/2007/2008/2009. I'm excited that it's finally become a 70.3 event because I'm hoping someone will be able to measure the swim accurately. That *should* be included in the $300 entry fee... shouldn't it? Surprised

Times have been historically fast due to a chronically short swim. It's always been a good 8-10 minutes fast.

The water can be chilly, but not that bad, so don't worry about it. I've done it all 4x in a sleeveless wetsuit. No problem.

The bike is flattish. Some very slight rollers, but it's easy to draft. Don't do it. One of the main problems many people have with this race is the tendency of a PELOTON to form. Not much in the way of hills to break up the waves of racers. If you are slower, stay to the right, if you are faster, PASS. Don't suck wheels!

The run is mostly flat... out and back x2 to a turn around near a lighthouse. You will see all of your friends several times on the run. Make sure you high 5 them as you go past each other! There are a couple of pretty steep hills on the run... one almost right out of transition, and the other... not long after the first one, if I remember correctly. Bur other than that, pancake flat. You will have to go up each hill 2x, as it's an out and back x2.

As far as the zoo is concerned... it's no big deal... you don't even get to see any animals, really... which is kind of a bummer. You run around the back of the zoo... it almost seems like a service access walkway to me... or something.

One of my favorite races! I'm excited to be doing it again this year!

Whizzz - thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us. Very reassuring. Might have to do a few swims in Lake Superior to try some "real" waves.

I will let you know when I have some time free to head down...maybe a Saturday ride in April? What kind of pace do you usually go at? I know the course is flat but I just want to roll the course to know what to expect

Haven't gotten through all the threads, but I ice my shin splints alot, but more importantly, I heat the shins with heat packs prior to every run.  I also wear Zensah shin splint socks.  Haven't totally gotten rid of my shin splints, but ran 5 miles for the first time yesterday which is a major feat for me.

I would definitely like to get together with people on a group ride in May and June if possible.  Doing the Knoxville olympic in a month so focusing on that right now.

Hope everyone's training is going well.
